Molecule By Molecule: Examining Sector 111's Ariel Atom

We called the gloriously minimalist Ariel Atom "awesomeness that defies all classification." And that's just how we feel about the outside; Auto Shepherd stopped by Arizona distributor Sector 111 (which, incidentally, will also handle the outrageous BAC Mono) to pore over every detail under the Atom's skin, what little of it there is. Then they took it to In-N-Out.

ASUS MWC teaser video ‘Twice the Detail' hints at higher-res tablet display

What's not to love about a short video insinuating something marvelous may be coming soon — especially if it means a hi-res screen on a tablet, à la that purported Retina Display we saw a few days back. We have to give ASUS credit for this one, as it's teasing us with a clip titled “Twice the Detail, Twice the Fun.” The vid's lead actors are a plethora of colorful marbles and a beige box that's very reminiscent of the form factor we're used to seeing on slates. And, let's not forget to mention the quick cameo by the famed Google search bar, a weather widget and a few other walk-in icons like YouTube's own.

Motor Trend picks their Best Driver's Car of 2011

It's been a long while since the guys at Motor Trend went through the trouble of picking the best driver's car, and for good reason. In order to pull off an actual test with any merit, the publication would need to wrangle some of the most impressive pieces of automotive engineering together on the same track on the same day. When we're talking about vehicles like the Lexus LFA, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Lotus Evora, Ferrari 458 Italia and the like, that can be a daunting feat, even for a rag of MT's swagger.

Hyundai previews new i30 wagon for Geneva

Hyundai has opened the curtains on the i30 wagon it will be bringing to the Geneva Motor Show, and it's a slightly less svelte five-door version of i30 hatch that debuted in Frankfurt. With its hump providing appreciably more space behind the B-pillar, Hyundai says the i30 wagon has best-in-class cargo room at 528 liters (18.6 cubic feet). It appears to fall right in the competitive sweet spot Hyundai says it's gunning for. At 4,485 millimeters the i30 wagon is 50 millimeters longer than the Volkswagen Golf Estate and 35 millimeters shorter than the seven-seat Ford Grand C-Max.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class sees Siri integration

If you were planning on getting yourself a Mercedes-Benz A-Class in the future, don't be surprised if your iPhone's Siri voice assistant feature will be integrated into the car's infotainment system. The automaker has announced that their Drive Plus Kit will see the integration of the iPhone with the vehicle's electronics platform and Mercedes-Benz' Digital DriveStyle App. The app will be used to display iPhone apps on the infotainment's display, and will allow users to access the app using either the vehicle's controls, or voice commands which we assume will be courtesy of Siri.

Megaupload co-founder granted bail by New Zealand judge

After being denied twice, Megaupload co-founder Kim Dotcom has been granted bail by a New Zealand judge, who ruled he isn't in fact a flight risk. To date, the court's rationale for keeping Dotcom behind bars has been that he might flee to his native Germany in a bid to avoid extradition to the US, where he stands accused of generating more than $175 million in criminal proceeds through the exchange of copyrighted material. And though prosecutors had previously argued that Dotcom has multiple passports and bank accounts and a “history of fleeing criminal charges,” district court Judge N.R.

Perseverance – it can mean “steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state”, or you can just summarize it into two words – Dennis Manarchy. Why so, you ask. Well, how many of you out there have the discipline to commit to a 10 year project in order to construct a 35-foot long camera. That is Dennis for you, where the camera can be extended to 35 feet in length, which offers more than ample space inside to stay overnight.

NHTSA investigating side airbag problems

NHTSA investigating side airbag problems

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating a number of vehicles for potentially faulty side airbags, according to The Detroit News. The airbags may have been manufactured with an ineffective mix of inflation gasses, which could leave the bags flat in the event of a collision. The defective hardware has found its way into models from Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Nissan, and has resulted in the recall of around 2,700 units so far. If NHTSA finds the defective airbags in other vehicles, that number could swell substantially.
The defective airbag inflators were manufactured by a Autoliv, a Swedish supplier.

See those two cars in the background, over the left shoulder of the talking head. They are in the process of crashing into one another, right there, live on the air. We're not sure what's more shocking, the crash or the reporter's reaction, which is to, well, stand there. What's perhaps most interesting about this strange occurrence is that it points out the ridiculousness of many local TV news reports.

Apple and Foxconn respond to ABC's iPad factory expose

. Apple and Foxconn have each responded to various claims made in ABC's Nightline segment that took a look inside two Foxconn factories in an effort to shed light on their working conditions. Responding to a comment made by one worker who claimed she carves aluminum shavings from 6,000 iPad cases each day, Apple said this was likely the result of a miscommunication. “In manufacturing parlance this is called deburring. Her line processes 3,000 units per shift, with two shifts per day for a total of 6,000. A single operator at Ms. Zhou's station would deburr 3,000 iPads in a shift,” Apple told ABC.

AMD Piledriver cores will clock over 4GHz, employ ‘resonant clock mesh'

AMD's Trinity APU can do some remarkable things, but we still don't know exactly what magic ingredients make its Piledriver cores superior to the tepidly received Bulldozer. Now though, a firm called Cyclos claims it's supplying ‘resonant clock mesh' power-saving technology for use in the new module. In speaking to the media, it's revealed that this will help to enable a “4+ GHz” factory clock speed, which sounds high if it definitely refers to an integrated chip with low-power credentials.

2013 VW Beetle Convertible spotted buttoned up for winter

Get ready, middle school art teachers – your new car is almost here. Following the launch of the re-skinned 2012 Beetle (and its oil-burning TDI kin), Volkswagen is hard at work prepping the new droptop variant, seen here testing in a not-so-convertible-friendly environment. The signature styling difference that separates the 2012 Beetle from the Bug that came before it is indeed the longer, flatter roofline, and it's interesting to see how well the shape has been kept intact during the transformation from hardtop to droptop.

Though the 8GB Nook Tablet features less total storage space than the 16GB model, it actually ships with more of that space open to the user. Whereas the 16GB model divvies out 12GB for B&N content, 3GB for the OS install, and only 1GB for sideloaded apps and other files, the 8GB model gives users access to 4GB of storage space to do with whatever they please. Starting March 12th, owners of the larger storage option will be able to take their Nook Tablet into a local Barnes & Noble store and have their device repartitioned, allowing for more space to be assigned to the user accessible portion of the drive.

Once in a while, everyone needs a break – even more so (and more often) for those who tend to work in high pressure jobs. After all, getting away from it all is crucial in maintaining a healthy, well-balanced mind as you recharge your inner being. While some of us like to go on long road trips, and others take the boating route, how about flying off elsewhere. Searching for flights can be quite a hassle since there are so many airlines around, so Google, being the king of search, released Google Flight Search last year.

Volvo and Polestar release new S60 TTA touring car

Volvo may not be the first name you'd think of in racing, but it stands as a dominant force in European touring cars. Before stepping up to the World Touring Car Championship last year, Volvo and its partner Polestar Racing had come to dominate the Swedish Touring Car Championship. While that series has since expanded to all of Scandinavia, Volvo made other plans in switching over to the TTA Racing Elite League. And this is the car with which it will be contesting the new series.

ChargeAll Wall Charger Review

ChargeAll Wall Charger Review

“One Charger. For All Your Devices.” The ChargeAll Wall Charger combines a wall wart-type plug with about six feet of cord and ten built-in tips along with ‘fast charge technology' that allows this one device to charge literally hundreds of different devices – phones, MP3 players, hand-held game systems, etc. – without additional tips or cords to lose or forget. On the face of it, I did not have high hopes for this product – it looked rather ungainly and I certainly did not need most of the included tips.

Mercedes AMG launches new SL63 with W03 F1 car in Barcelona [w/videos]

Any outfit with the cash can buy a Formula One team. Integrating it into an existing automaker, however, isn't an overnight proposition. Both Lotus and Caterham are currently undergoing that process, but so is Mercedes-Benz. The German automaker bought out what was then the World Champion Brawn GP team (previously known as Honda and before that, as British American Racing) a couple of years ago as a standalone racing team, and has been bringing it into the corporate fold ever since. This year, the team previously known as Mercedes GP has been rebranded as Mercedes AMG (as was the division that produces its F1 engines).

Protect Your Pet with CritterCords

Protect Your Pet with CritterCords

I used to have a cat some years ago.  Rio lived more than 18 years, but I worried she wouldn't make it to 5 years because of her habit of chewing on electrical cords.  I wish CritterCord cord protectors had been around back then.  The clear tubing slips over the electrical cord to provide a protective layer.  They are heavy-gauge, so they resist even the most determined chewer.  They're also infused with citrus scent and a bitter taste that won't wash away that should make the cords less attractive to your pet.  They are sized to fit standard outlet cords or USB and smaller computer peripherals cords.  Each size is available in a 6-foo

Fast Forward brings Unity games to Windows Phone

Windows Phone device owners might have quite a number of titles to choose from when it comes to gaming, but one thing that the platform has been missing when compared to Android and iOS is the support for Unity 3D games. As of now, Windows Phone only allows apps created with Silverlight or XNA - a problem for Unity since the engine isn't written in either of those languages. However, it looks like we now have a solution to the problem. The folks over at Press Play have come up with a toolset called Fast Forward (FFWD), which is built for porting Unity games to Windows Phone.
