Thief attempts to steal handphone with chopsticks

To kickstart your weekend with something interesting, here is a recently shot video that will open your eyes. If ever find yourself in China, you should watch out for men with chopsticks. This recently uploaded footage on the internet shows a new breed of cellphone thief in the country - a man that used a pair of chopsticks to pickpocket a phone out of a another man's pocket. We literally mean “pick”-pocket in this case.
Fortunately for the victim, the thief drops the phone before unsuccessfully trying to stash it away before his getaway. But he might not be so lucky next time.

7-inch Acer Iconia Tab A100 will finally be released in August for $300

The story of Acer's first 7-inch Android-powered tablet has certainly been an interesting one. The Acer Iconia Tab A100 was announced back in February alongside the Iconia Tab A500 and the Iconia Smart phone/tablet hybrid, yet it still isn't sold anywhere. As a matter of fact, in May we heard that the Iconia Tab A100 was delayed until the second half of the year.

Samsung Q2, 2011: no more then 16.7M smartphones shipped. It's still #3, behind Apple and Nokia

Ok. That was totally unexpected. As the earnings season comes to a close, with Samsung's Q2 earnings report today, we were supposed to have the final data point to see who was  the top dog in smartphones in Q2 2011. And we sort of got it.

It's Apple with 20.34 million iPhones shipped.

What was really unexpected - it's who may have come in second. It's Nokia, with 16.7 million smartphones.

As Nokia smartphone shipments crashed this year, with the onslaught of Android phones like Galaxy S, everyone was expecting them to lose smartphone rankings top spot to both Apple, and Samsung.

Nintendo 3DS Gets Slashed by $80; Current Owners Get Free Games

Don't look now, but another gadget is slashing its price. The much-anticipated Nintendo 3DS drops its price by up to $80–from $249 to $169–beginning August 12. The move is not just a reaction to slow initial sales of the handheld console, which is attributed by several factors including the recent Japan earthquake and tsunami, but also as a preparation for the launch of Nintendo 3DS' A-List titles such as Kid Icarus.
Current owners of the 3DS who felt cheated need not worry, as Nintendo is giving them 10 free NES games along with 10 free Game Boy Advance titles on September 1.

HTC Trademark Filings Reveal Potential New Handset Names

HTC Trademark Filings Reveal Potential New Handset Names

Velo, Cheetah, Skyrocket, Titan, and Raider. No, that isn't the lineup of some new super hero alliance, it's the most recent batch of trademark filings from HTC. The names have been registered in Europe and give us an idea of what we could potentially be calling some of the Taiwanese manufacturer's future devices. Of coure, a trademark filing isn't always an indication that a name will be used. HTC could merely be reserving the names for their potential. We could see all, one, none, or any combination of the five come to market as smartphones or tablets. It is also possible HTC could sit on the names for as long as their trademarks allow.

Packlight lights up places where the sun don't shine

Packlight lights up places where the sun don't shine

The problem with the current crop of torch lights that we have right now is that they're usually large, bulky and hard to store. Two designers have decided to come up with a new kind of torch called the Packlight. Featuring 45 LEDs, this really bright gadget is thin, strong and flexible. You can bend it around objects or even have it hanging off the side of your bag and it won't be a bother.
Its flexibility also means that users will be able to bend the Packlight to fit it into tiny spaces to light up the dark - something you can't do with regular torch lights.

Stanford researchers create transparent battery

Stanford researchers create transparent battery

We've had about all of the transparent displays we can handle. Besides, what good is a screen you can see through if the electronics behind it are as opaque as ever. Thankfully, the fine folks at Stanford are working hard to move us towards a future filled with invisible gadgets. Yi Cui and Yuan Yang led a team that have created a lithium-ion battery that appears transparent. In actuality, the cells are composed of a very fine mesh of electrodes, approximately 35-microns wide that are small enough to appear invisible to the naked eye.

[Review] PhotoFast i-FlashDrive

We received last week one of the first production models of PhotoFast's iPhone/iPad data sharing drive. PhotoFast is a Taiwanese enterprise with a well-established name and still one of the pioneers in the research and development of ultra-fast memory devices. In this review we will talk about their latest entry in what I tend to call the "i-Segment", where "I" is everything Apple manufactures. We received one of the very first 8GB samples. Which should represent the final built; potential customers can buy online or at their local retail.
It is a USB flash drive with an iPod/iPhone/iPad connector at the other end.

New Motorola Atrix with 8MP camera and 1080p video recording coming to AT&T?

New Motorola Atrix with 8MP camera and 1080p video recording coming to AT&T?

We're not quite sure what's going on here, but photos of a new Atrix-like Motorola Android smartphone have appeared somewhere in China, making us believe that AT&T is getting ready to introduce an upgraded version of the above-mentioned device. The unnamed handset looks a lot like the Atrix. However, on the back it flaunts an 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, instead of a 5MP one with 720p video (like the original Atrix has). Also: there's no sign of the MotoBlur logo, the headset jack and power button have been repositioned, the AT&T logo has been moved above the display, and the earpiece has been redesigned.
