Angry Birds with gesture controls collides with select Samsung Smart TVs

Angry Birds with gesture controls collides with select Samsung Smart TVs

The war against pigs is now available as a free download on some of the company's silver screens. Thanks to a built-in camera and the firm's Smart Interaction tech, which typically help users navigate menus and browse the web, gamers can smash through swine defenses using gesture controls. In order to download the app from the Samsung Smart Hub, you'll need a television in the Plasma 8000 range or a 2012 LED 7500 or higher.

Security experts hack payment terminals to steal credit card info, play games

If a payment terminal could be forced into servitude as a crude handheld gaming device, what else could it be made to do. Researchers at the Black Hat conference showed just what mischief a commonly used UK PoS terminal could get up to when they inserted a chip-and-pin card crafted with malicious code. That enabled them to install a racing game and play it, using the machine's pin pad and screen. With the same hack, they were able to install a far less whimsical program as well - a Trojan that could record card numbers and PINs, which could be extracted later by inserting another rogue card.

Motorola to allow bootloader unlocking from Photon Q 4G LTE onwards

Motorola to allow bootloader unlocking from Photon Q 4G LTE onwards

Motorola's initial promise to allow unlocked bootloaders came across to many enthusiasts as somewhat hollow: as long as there was an escape clause, carriers like AT&T and Verizon could clamp down and maintain the tough-to-modify status quo. RAZR-philes will be happy to know that there's a plan to cut their own chains loose, after all. Starting with the Photon Q 4G LTE's August launch, owners will have the option to unlock the bootloader of at least some devices in an official way that reportedly keeps carriers satisfied.

Mojang sued for alleged patent infringement in Android version of Minecraft

Mojang has seen the sort of success that most game developers dream of with Minecraft, but it looks like it's now also found itself thrust into the rarely desirable world of patent lawsuits. As revealed by Minecraft creator Notch himself on Twitter, Mojang is being sued by the Texas-based Uniloc (which has also taken aim at Electronic Arts, Gameloft and others) over some alleged patent infringement in the Android version of Minecraft.

Do you skip intro sequences. Do they feel like a pointless interlude standing between you and the game you're trying to play. It really depends on the game, doesn't it. I barely lasted a few minutes when confronted with Max Payne 3's protracted, seemingly endless interludes, but I'll certainly watch the starting sequences for Guild Wars 2.

Nintendo 3DS game download codes sold at online retailers

Nintendo is said to be selling 3DS game download codes at online retailers, and some of these retailers would include Tsutaya Online Shopping, Rakuten Books, Seven Net Shopping, Yodobashi.com and Joshin Net Shopping. Just what can you do with these download codes. Well, you can enjoy God-mode in all Mario games, wait a minute here, I have gone off tangent. You cannot do that, but with the download codes which you purchased, you can then use them to download games from the 3DS e-Shop.
To put things into perspective, you end up with a trio of choices when it comes to purchasing a downloadable 3DS game.

Pixar Image Computer cameos on eBay

Pixar Image Computer cameos on eBay

If you love collecting old and historical computer stuff, then eBay is your destination right now. Over at eBay, we spotted a Pixar Image Computer with a $25,000 price tag on it. In case you're completely alien to this rare piece of gadgetry, the Pixar Image Computer was actually a graphics designing computer built by the computer division of Lucasfilm. When Apple co-founder Steve Jobs bought the computer division in 1986, it was renamed to Pixar. The Pixar Image Computer was specifically built for scientific markets that required high-end visualization.

Medicine, meteorology, and geophysicsĂ‚  were among the markets targeted.

Still have another cube-shaped hole in your vintage computer collection. Then you may be interested in this rare specimen that's currently up for auction on eBay. Long before Pixar produced its first feature film, it sold the Pixar Image Computer, a high-end system developed at Lucasfilm and intended for a variety of professional uses (from medical to meteorological applications). As the eBay seller notes, the computer also has a distinctive "tombstone" design, with the Pixar logo emblazoned on the front (not to mention a matching CRT).

Engineers and designers at Ford have created a special edition Mustang to celebrate the Red Tails, the black Tuskegee Airmen who flew P51 Mustangs and bombers in World War II. To be shown at the EAA Air Venture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the Red Tails Mustang VIN 00051 will be auctioned during the Gathering of Eagles to support the Young Eagles, a program that gives youth a chance to experience general aviation flying. Starting with a Mustang GT with the glass roof, the exterior gets a non-production aluminum-look paint finish with, naturally, a red tail.

Android Jelly Bean OS manages speedy launch on ZTE's N880E smartphone

Unless you've been buying your Android gadgets exclusively from Google's Play store, chances to get your hands on the latest iteration of its mobile OS are still pretty rare. Color us surprised, then, when ZTE announce that one of its humbler handsets from last year is making the leap from Android 2.3 all the way to version 4.1. The China-only N880E appears to be only the third smartphone to launch with the buttery smooth Android trimmings, spread across a 4-inch WVGA (480 x 800) display. The smartphone holds onto the four off-screen capacitive Android keys and is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM.

Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake makes its video debut

There is little to see here except more of what you can't have, but Mercedes-Benz has served up a promo video for the 2013 CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake. The closest we Americans will get to it, however, are the specs: 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8 with 525 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, a glorious options list and a rumbling exhaust. Thankfully, Mercedes-Benz does sell the CLS63 AMG sedan here in the United States, but it just can't match the sexiness of a svelte shooting brake.

Xiaomi's next smartphone, the MI-2, may once again come with top of the line specs for a very reasonable price. That, in fact, is also the story of the Chinese company's first handset, the MI-1. This device has been selling in batches online only ever since last August. All these sales have been extremely successful. At one point, Xiaomi sold 150,000 smartphones in 13 minutes.

But obviously there has to be a new Xiaomi handset on its way. The company aims to release one new product per year, keeping with its tradition of packing the latest hardware in an unbelievably cheap phone.

Vodafone walks us through a phone's Android 4.0 upgrade, explains our protracted thumb-twiddling

We're used to seemingly interminable waits for phone firmware upgrades for carrier-locked phones. What is it that takes so long. Vodafone UK isn't promising a quicker process, but it's offering a rare walkthrough of just what itself (and many other carriers) do to rubber stamp a firmware upgrade. Using the Huawei Ascend G 300's Android 4.0 update as the reference point, Vodafone explains that the actual network testing lasts a week or less, depending on the scope of the upgrade - it's the requirements for branding and carrier-specific network settings that introduce additional overhead.

ASUS loads P8Z77V with USB attached SCSI, beats Windows 8 to the punch

There's no doubt about it, USB 3.0 is wicked fast when pitted against its predecessors - but the ancient bulk-only transport protocol it uses is showing its age. Some newer external drives hope sidestep the old protocol by supporting a new one: UASP, or, USB attached SCSI. As its name implies, the modern protocol leverages the SCSI command set to reduce latency, enable queue functions and improve performance for compatible drives. Windows 8 will ship with UASP drivers baked in, but the protocol is already available in the form of third-party controllers and drivers.

On the other hand, that sounds eminently fixable.

Where there's smoke, there's fire and now that the EU's caught a whiff of alleged misconduct on Microsoft's part, it's dragging Windows 8 under the hot lights. Though MS moved swiftly earlier this week to acknowledge and remedy the technical glitch that prevented users from selecting alternate browsers on early 2011 Win7 machines, it now faces similar claims from third parties regarding its upcoming Win8 tablets. We're big fans of the Nexus 7 here at Engadget HQ - it's just hard not to like a $200 tablet with a Tegra 3 SoC and 7-inch glass-bonded IPS display running pure Jelly Bean. Of the few missing features, there's one we're bemoaning more than the lack of rear camera, and that's the absence of any kind of HDMI or MHL video output. So far, watching movies with the Nexus 7's been relegated to using a Nexus Q and streaming content from Google Play or YouTube.
