Bite Counter knows how many donuts you devoured, shames you into eating less

Because all you ever really wanted was an $800 bracelet that counts calories. enter the Bite Counter. It's the retro-lookin'lovechild of two Clemson University researchers that helps its hosts approximate caloric consumption by counting how many bites they take. Color us skeptical, as the meatbag wearing the gizmo has to - gasp. - actuallyremember to both start and stop the device each time they feast. The duo is hopeful it'll glean useful data for future research, as the contraption can be used "anywhere, such as at restaurants or while working" - you know, places where scribbling how much you eat in a secret diary is frowned upon.

HTC posts record sales (again), getting itself something nice (Dashwire) to celebrate

While the top three smartphone makers (Apple, Samsung, and Nokia) garner most of the press, HTC is quietly becoming a juggernaut. IDC's number five just posted yet another month of record sales, hitting $1.56 billion - almost twice what the company moved in July of last year. To celebrate its continued meteoric rise, the Taiwanese manufacturer has announced it plans to acquire Dashwire, the cloud services company behind the awesome brilliant Awesome Drop, for $18.5 million. The only question is, how long HTC can keep this growth up.

Gmail's Preview Pane brings 'tablet-like' layout to your browser, but kills Multiple Inboxes

Google's still doing a fine job of ignoring Gcal's inability to routinely provide alerts and notifications to select users (nah, we're not bitter), but at least the Gmail team seems to be firing on all cylinders. Just this week, the outfit revealed its newest Labs feature - Preview Pane. As you've probably gleaned from the title, it provides a "tablet-like" layout that's actually similar to standalone mail clients from yesteryear, and for those with more vertical space than horizontal, there's even an option to split the divider in that manner.

Gmail for Mobile gets a facelift, now ready for its Retina Display close-up

Gmail for mobile was looking a little tired around the eyes, so Google went ahead and gave the ol' web app a cosmetic lift. The update, announced on the Gmail blog, packs a hat trick's worth of tweaks aimed squarely at iOS and QNX (read: BB PlayBook) users. Email messages can now be manually refreshed with a top-down pull and release - a feature similar to Twitter's own drag-down approach. The team also added a bit of finesse to inbox navigation with new sliding transitions, and even beefed up the graphical interface, taking full advantage of that Retina Display.

Samsung Hercules spotted?

Samsung Hercules spotted?

The folks over at mobilesyrup recently took a photograph of an unannounced Samsung device at the Samsung Mobile concert last night in Toronto. Looking a lot like the Galaxy S 2, the phone features a larger screen but is missing the optical trackpad - a feature of the phone. In fact, it looks a lot like a cross between the Galaxy S 2, Nexus S and the Infuse. Seeing how there hasn't been any other Samsung phones announced recently, speculations have pinned the phone as the Samsung Hercules.
The Hercules has been rumored about earlier this year, but there hasn't been any news or footage about the device recently until now.

Maserati to unveil Grand Cherokee-based SUV in Frankfurt

Maserati to unveil Grand Cherokee-based SUV in Frankfurt

It's go time over at the Modena headquarters of Maserati. The automaker itself set the ambitious target of doubling its sales figures, but its corporate overlord Sergio Marchionne wants the brand to increase their sales tenfold. That's ambitious and then some, and in order to get there, the Trident marque is going to need some new product. Fortunately, Maserati has just such plans in store. And we already know a bit about all of 'em. The Quattroporte will be replaced by two new sedans – one smaller and one larger than the current model – while a new SUV is set to join the lineup for the first time.

Now, customers of American Airlines can watch in flight TV and movies on their own computers, instead of being forced to stare at the terrible seat-back screens of old. Gogo Vision, as it is called, is provided by in-flight Wi-Fi company Gogo, and has been installed on all 15 of AA's Boeing 767-200 aircraft.

Right now, you're probably having the same reaction as me.

Gakufu Camera iPhone app lets you scan printed music notes and play them back

There are musicians out there in the world who are able to play out a song's melody on their instrument just by looking at the music score sheet. Unfortunately not all of us are as musically gifted or that proficient in our theory and instruments to be able to accomplish a similar feat, but that's what technology is for, right. Japan-based instrument maker, Kawai, seems to agree with that logic and have come up with an iPhone app titled "Gakufu Camera".

The Deutschstämmige genius hit 800Mbps with only light bulb?

The Deutschstämmige genius hit 800Mbps with only light bulb?

Some chinese dudes demonstrated some old-fashion tech last year that transmit data with these LED lights up to speed of 2Mbps. Earlier this year researchers hit 500Mbps with white LEDs now, using a combination of white, green, blue, and red, the team ramped that up to 800Mbps, officially putting Ethernet on notice. The line-of-site networking won't actually replace your standard Cat 5 line or WiFi router, but it could find a home in places like hospitals where radio-based wireless technology can cause problems for sensitive equipment.

Plugless Power for your electric car

Evatran's Plugless Power wireless/proximity charging system grows up by evolving into the form of a new circular sensor that is far removed from the boring, rectangle design which folks caught a glimpse of at the Plug-In 2010 Conference. The change is not just cosmetic, ending up as round simply because customers preferred something that looked like that, but rather, the insides have been improved as well. The Plugless Power system is now hovering at efficiency levels of 90% to 91%, which is at least 10% more in total compared to last year's overall efficiency of 80%.

Android virus does voice recordings on the quiet

Who says that phones are safe enough to use that there is no need for anti-virus software. That might be true in the older days before color displays and Internet connectivity on the handset became the norm, but now, we have mobile operating systems that do resemble that of a PC in many ways, hence opening up some of the same doors as well to external threats. There is word of a virus which targets Android-powered devices which is touted to be able to covertly record phone conversations.
