Mozilla: Brazilians to get first phones running Boot to Gecko

Mozilla's HTML5-based mobile OS, Boot to Gecko is a promising platform, but one that wasn't ready for prime-time. However, it appears that Brazilians on Telefonica will get the first crack at buying BtG phones, and the handsets are set to go on sale by the end of this year or in early 2013. The good news — for our South American readers, at least — came from Gary Kovacs, Mozilla's CEO, who made the announcement in São Paulo today.

Google app review video shows Share to 'Drive' option

To close out each week, the Android Developer Relations team hosts a Friday App Review video. This Friday, however, the focus is far from whatever apps are being showcased (psst. it's Handy Scanner); instead, all eyes are on the Share to 'Drive' option, seen just below the 'Bluetooth' logo in the screen capture above. It's shown at the 32:53 mark in the video just after the break, and while this certainly isn't confirmation that Goog's own cloud storage service will be hitting the masses soon, it's one of the more tangible pieces of evidence that Google Drive is at least a real initiative.

Motorola devices get universal root method

Motorola devices get universal root method

XDA Forums member rodrigojfuentes has developed a universal root method for Motorola devices running Android 2.3. While the new method isn’t necessarily the simplest way to go about gaining superuser access (it’s far from a one-click root), it does provide a common base from which developers and enthusiasts can work with Motorola hardware. To gain root, users must be running Linux (or a Linux virtual machine within Windows or Mac). The process requires obtaining and altering several files and then flashing the Android device.

Ex-Fisker chair blames Mitt Romney attacks for DOE loan hold-up

Ah, election season. Former Fisker Automotive Chairman and current investor Ray Lane is blaming Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for the delays in procuring federal loans that have been earmarked for the maker of the extended-range plug-in Karma and the upcoming Atlantic, according to Delaware Online. In an e-mail, Lane said Romney is mistakenly grouping the Fisker loan from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with money given to failed companies like solar-panel producer Solyndra.

Galaxy Nexus pre-orders sell out at Sprint

. Sprint's highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Nexus is no longer available for pre-order after initial stock sold out this week. Pre-order availability began just this past Monday, and Sprint's pre-sales launch inventory was depleted by Thursday evening. It is difficult to gauge demand since the number of Galaxy Nexus handsets Sprint had allocated for pre-sales is unknown, but a source told BGR that “pre-sales supply was healthy” ahead of the device's launch on April 22nd.

Recent reports in the same vein have indicated that instead of an August roll-out, Samsung is rumored to introduce the service alongside the upcoming flagship product, Samsung Galaxy S III which is allegedly launching in London on May 3rd.

Fez Xbox 360 Game Review

Since its introduction at the Independent Games Festival in 2007, many video game reporters wonder when will Fez be released. You cannot blame them from getting too excited as Polytron releases the game for Xbox Live Arcade. Fez is a 2D game with a 3D perspective, a gameplay that is reminiscent to Super Paper Mario and Crush. The character manipulates his cubic world by shifting between its four sides. The use of Escher-like optical illusions reveals new pathways or secret passageways on specific sides of the world.

The story even pokes into the game's play on dimension.

NVIDIA believes Xbox-quality graphics could arrive on our mobile devices in 2013

While the graphics on our smartphones aren't too shabby, it would be hard to compare them against consoles like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. However NVIDIA feels quite optimistic about the possibility of our mobile devices one day surpassing consoles such as the Xbox 360. The graph pictured above was revealed earlier today where it basically showed the level of graphics performance that NVIDIA's series of Tegra processors could hit come 2013 where it would be on par with the Xbox 360, and in 2014 that's when it will apparently be good enough to beat out the current GPU used by the gaming console.

Rumor: iPhone 5 Will Feature “Metallic Glass”

Another round of iPhone 5 rumors surfaced. If talkative Korean sources are to believe, the next iPhone will be cased in “liquidmetal” and that it will arrive in October at the earliest. Earlier reports claim the upcoming iPhone will debut this summer, so why the delay you ask. Apparently Qualcomm, the manufacturer of some of the smartphone's necessary chips, cannot churn out production fast enough.

Meanwhile, the “liquidmetal” casing can be described more accurately as a glassy metal.

While its parent company goes through a dramatic reinvention, Sony Music's scraped together $2.2 billion to lead a consortium that's just bought EMI's music publishing business. While it'll sell off the three Virgin and Famous Music labels to avoid competition concerns, the company will gain access to three million songs from artists like Frank Sinatra, Jay-Z and Adele. It won't affect the day-to-day running of EMI's record label, which is a separate entity, but it will make Sony the biggest music publisher in the world.

We take a lot of photos with our smartphones, no doubt about that. The convenience plus the increasing level of quality has quickly turned our phones into our go-to cameras for those impromptu moments. Let's not forget that apps such as Instagram or Hipstamatic have changed the way that we take photos, turning otherwise boring images into something a bit more visually appealing. So instead of taking those photos and just uploading them onto Facebook, app developer Ian Tuason hopes to take all of your iPhone photos and turning it into one giant mosaic.

Spotify for iPad is “in the works”

A couple of days ago, an iPad was spotted online with Spotify's app running on it. This fueled the speculation that Spotify could finally be making its way onto the iPad despite its competition, Rdio and MOG, already having apps on the iPad. Many had expected the app to be launched at Spotify's 18th of April event, but unfortunately it turns out that the event was more of an announcement of Spotify's new partnership with Coke. So what about the app then, does it really exist and when will it be coming.
Those were the questions in the minds of the audience and it was posed during the Q&A session.

The battery design, consisting of many laptop-style lithium ion batteries stacked together, was chosen after two years of research and a $1.8 million energy grant.
