Nokia to sell 2 million Lumia phones in Q4, Deutsche Bank says

. Fourth-quarter sales of Nokia's new Lumia line of smartphones will reach 2 million units, Deutsche Bank reaffirmed this week. Nokia's stock took a hit this week as a number of analysts cast a shadow on its debut Windows Phone-powered smartphones. Pacific Crest's James Faucette cut his sales estimates this quarter from 2 million units to just 500,000, and Bernstein Research analyst Pierre Ferragu said the phones were too expensive and lacked innovation. Analysts at Deutshe Bank disagreed, however, reiterating earlier sales estimates of 2 million Lumia phones this quarter.

Chrome to gain plug and play gamepad support and WebRTC video chat in 2012

Seems like Big G updates its browser of choice with fresh features every time we turn around, and one of Google's own, dev advocate Paul Kinlan, revealed that another spate of upgrades are arriving for Chrome early next year. The headliner is plug-and-play support for gamepads, but native support for cameras, microphones and open-source video chat app WebRTC are on the docket too - features that give Chrome some considerable gaming chops when combined with its existing WebGL and HTML 5 prowess and, he says, could bring OnLive to the web without plugins.

Researchers put smartphones on a power diet, drastically improve battery life

Nokia's Asha handsets already use browser compression to reduce data costs and power consumption for customers in the developing world, but the company's Finnish neighbours over at Aalto University have taken a totally different approach. By using a network proxy to squash traffic into bursts rather than a constant bit rate, and by forcing a smartphone's modem into idle mode between each burst, the researchers claim they can cut 3G power consumption by 74 percent.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 goes on sale in Jakarta, chaos ensues

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 was introduced a few days ago and while it wasn't exactly a big deal over in this side of the world, things were a little different in Jakarta, Indonesia. The phone went up for sale today, and thousands of people stood in line to get their hands on the phone. What was supposed to be an orderly event where customers would be dealt with on a first come, first served basis turned into chaos with reports of people fainting and getting injured in the process. The organizers of the launch had announced earlier this week that the first thousand customers would receive a 50% discount on the phone.

Siri can start your car remotely

Forget about asking mundane stuff like how the weather would be like, or to schedule your appointments. Why not have it do something far more interesting, like starting your vehicle remotely. Of course, we do know that Apple is notorious for their closed system, hence making it really, really difficult for developers to come up with something out of Apple's box – but then again developer @plamoni is crafty enough to set up a proxy server so that Siri can talk to it, tricking it into thinking that this is one of Apple's servers.

HTC G1 gets its own ICS ROM

HTC G1 gets its own ICS ROM

Ever since the Ice Cream Sandwich source code has been released, tons of devices have been getting their own ICS ROMs. Now, Google's original Android device, the HTC G1, now has its own Ice Cream Sandwich ROM. Jcarrz1 from XDA-Developers has uploaded a video of his G1 running on a ICS ROM. In the past, we have seen the G1 also running on Honeycomb.  The touchscreen works slowly along with all of the apps and special features that are included in ICS. Unfortunately, the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Rotation do not function.

It's pretty fascinating that the G1 can run on Android 4.0 when most thought it wouldn't go past version 1.5.

Meizu MX resurfaces, home button gets a nip-and-tuck, turns into optical trackpad?

It's been a while since we've seen the Meizu MX, but these latest shots from Mr. Blurrycam reveal that the phone could see a substantial tweak to its main home button. These photos are likely to be of a work-in-progress handset, with plenty of bizarre cutaways presumably obscuring details of the mole. In the leaked drawings, Meizu's upcoming smartphone looked an awful lot like its M9 predecessor, albeit with a bigger screen, running on a superior A9 Cortex processor. The main button apparently doubles as an optical trackpad, with the two flanking capacitive buttons rotating depending on orientation.

Nvidia believes Tegra 3 tablets will eventually hit $300

Nvidia's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang believes that pricing of Tegra 3 tablets will drop quickly. Jen-Hsun Huang expects at least some of those tablets to be on sale for $299 within “a couple quarters,” according to a post on Engadget. That remark was made over lunch and there is no explanation why the price could drop so dramatically from the current figure of about $500 – a price point that has been pretty stable for the basic models of high-end tablets for more than a year and a half.

Droid 4 Could Launch on December 8

The rate at which Android smartphones are cycled out is becoming a bit disturbing. With only about a half a year between the two, Motorola and Verizon could be releasing their next Droid on December 8th. The Droid 4 would be the fourth device in the series to be launched within a span of two years. For what it’s worth, the handset has come a long way, and the latest iteration promises to continue the tradition of being among the top handsets with full QWERTY keyboards. The phone will sport a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, dual-core processor, and support for Verizon 4G LTE.

HTC may be developing Chrome OS / Android hybrid device

. HTC may be developing a new hybrid netbook/tablet “internet access device” that combines both Chrome OS and Android, presumably in some sort of dual-boot environment. Samsung and Acer are the only two major suppliers that currently offer devices powered by Google's Chrome OS, otherwise known as Chromebooks, but DigiTimes said the two firms have only sold about 25,000 – 30,000 units this year. The lower-powered netbooks currently cost between $350 and $450 and will likely need to fall in price in order to attract consumers.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime will hit North America soon, that much has been made clear when the quad-core Android tablet was announced earlier this month. Unfortunately though, all the manufacturer gave us back then was the pretty vague time frame of “December”. Yesterday Amazon USA started taking pre-orders for the tablet, but it didn't give us a shipping date, so naturally we were left wondering. Well, not anymore. Today we have not one, but two different release dates for the Transformer Prime in the US.

Android Market website now supports unofficial devices

Most Android devices ship with the Android Market installed, but those devices need to be officially approved by Google in order to support the Google experience, which means preloaded Market, and apps like Maps and so on. However, there are quite a number of devices that don't ship with this official support, namely the recently released Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet. It is possible to sideload the Market onto those devices to download apps with it, but if you tried to use the Android Market website, your device will be unrecognized by it.

. Leading smartphone vendor HTC on Wednesday trimmed its fourth-quarter revenue forecast by roughly 23% as stiff competition from Samsung and Apple has seeming slowed sales. The Taiwan-based company became the No.1 smartphone vendor in the U.S. by shipment volume last quarter, but a six-month string of record revenue came to an end in October following the release of Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 4S. iPhone 4S runs into Wi-Fi issues?

It seems that with the release of the iPhone 4, everything was not peaches and cream – first of all, there was the antenna-gate issue, where holding the unibody chassis of the iPhone 4 resulted in dropped calls or signals for no particular reason (at first anyways), and now with the iPhone 4′s successor, the iPhone 4S, some folks have already complained about a bunch of issues including the battery drain problem, with the latest stream of complaints focusing on Wi-Fi connectivity. While the former problem was fixed thanks to the iOS 5.0.1 update, that update did not do much to make sure Wi-Fi issues were resolved.

Well, fast forward to today and the dad who dishes out a belting might probably end up in court for child abuse (how times have changed), and does this mean it is OK to play with one's food.

Droid RAZR fails to survive a pocket drop while Galaxy Nexus survives a tumble down the stairs

One of the features of Gorilla Glass is that it's pretty darn tough. The name itself implies said toughness, but it appears that all that Gorilla Glass and kevlar on the Motorola Droid RAZR failed to survive a pocket drop on its face on concrete, while a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with its "fortified" glass survived a toss down a flight of carpeted stairs. It's a bit of an unfair comparison we know, especially since the carpeting probably managed to soften the blow, and we have no doubt that the Motorola Droid RAZR would survive the same drop too.
