iPhoneography and the Mobile Art Movement

iPhoneography and the Mobile Art Movement

Regulars here at The Gadgeteer know that I tend to blather on and on about how much I love the camera built into the iPhone 4S. It's one of the main reasons why I continue to flutter back to the iPhone after taking brief vacations using other handsets. I guess I'm in good company because I just learned about an art festival that's been created completely around iPhone photography. An upcoming exhibit at the LA Mobile Arts Festival, will showcase over 500 works of art from iPhoneographers worldwide. If you happen to live in the Santa Monica, California area, check it out at the Santa Monica Art Studio on Aug 18-25.

. Hidden configuration files found in Boot Camp Assistant suggest Apple (AAPL) may be readying a redesign for its iMac and Mac Pro line of computers, according to AppleInsider. The files contain information that lets the software know what Mac models can install a second operating system from a USB flash drive. While the list includes the existing MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers, it also includes two new Mac models that have not been release yet - the sixth-generation Mac Pro and the thirteenth-generation iMac.

Back in March, we told you that Chevrolet was actually going to build the Whitesnake-level-awesome COPO Camaro after the drag-ready Camaro was showed off at SEMA as a concept. The first four COPO Camaros have filed out of the COPO Assembly Facility. COPO numbers 3, 5, 7 and 9 were rolled onto the transport truck, and car number seven was caught on video, highlighted by the roar of its monstrous engine.

Morpheus lander crashes, burns and explodes in untethered flight test, NASA remains optimistic (video)

As noisy as we found Project Morpheus' tethered flight test, its untethered follow-up was far, far louder. Yesterday, the experimental lander suffered a hardware component failure, which NASA says "prevented it from maintaining stable flight." This caused it to crash into the ground and well, explode. On the upside, the space agency says that these kinds of failures were anticipated, stating that they are a normal part of the development process and will be used to build better systems moving forward. You didn't think Curiosity made its touchdown on Mars without learning from a few mistakes, did you.

RED claims Dragon is 'single most significant sensor in the history of image capture'

Red Camera's bombastic CEO, Jim Jannard, says that internal testing of the new 6K Dragon sensor proves that it's the new "resolution and dynamic range king." He also claims it will be "the cleanest sensor you have ever seen, ISO 2000 looks better than MX [the current sensor] at ISO 800." The imaging chip was first outed at NAB in April, promising 15+ stops of DR and 120fps at a full 5K of resolution, with $6,000 upgrades for Epic customers by the end of the year. Scarlet-X users will also get the Dragon, though no price or date has been given yet for that camera.

We do know that the self-proclaimed “world's most advanced mobile operating system” is about to get bumped up even further the echelon with the arrival of the iPhone 5 (or next generation iPhone, depending on just what you want to call it), and iOS 6 is its name. Apart from some changes that folks might not jive with, it is nearly certain that iOS 6 will run nicely on the higher resolution and subsequently, larger display of the iPhone 5 compared to the smartphone's predecessors, meaning the user interface will hum along at a resolution of 640 x 1136.

While the WatchESPN app for iOS got an update that opened up mobile streams for Comcast cable customers back in May, it's taken until now for Android devices to enjoy the same access. Along with unspecified bug fixes, version 1.6.0 worked on the Nexus 7 and Galaxy S II we tried it on, although we did need to log out and log in again with our account credentials to get the streams working the first time.

Foursquare brings nearby check-ins back to BlackBerry and iPhone, saves our pub crawls

The Foursquare 5.0 revamp wasn't all good news for some of the location service's most loyal fans: the design quietly scrapped the option to only see check-ins from nearby friends. After much clamoring, Foursquare has found a way to tuck it back in, starting with BlackBerry and iPhone users. A pull or a tap now filters between check-ins worldwide and just those from friends gallivanting around town - just in case you'd rather not see your international friends enjoying the weekend before you do.

Have a smartphone from Seoul or Cupertino riding in the pocket of your jeans. You aren't the only one. New documents filed in Samsung and Apple's ongoing legal battle reveal specific sales data going back several years, confirming something we always knew to be true: there are a lot of devices out there. Samsung's filing reveals that it has sold 21.25 million phones and 1.4 million tablets since June 2010, and further breaks down the data by device and, in some cases, carrier. The Galaxy S II, for instance, takes the lion's share of US sales with over 4.1 million units sold between all models and carriers.

They say that one of the major killers to any relationship would be communication, followed closely by money – and most of the time, it would be the lack of either that gives rise to discontentment. Well, how you communicate is one thing, so you might as well minimize any risk of misunderstanding with the proper tools at your disposal – the art of using the right words, waiting for the right moment and tone of voice would be something else altogether. WhitePages intends to merge social, call and text ID into a solitary app in order to usher a better communications experience.

During the first practice day of the 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb we checked out Monster Tajima's new electric-powered E-runner and watched the Vintage and Exhibition divisions roar up the mountain. Our second day, however, was reserved for the fastest of the groups – Unlimited, Time Attack and Open Wheel – which were running in the bottom portion of the course that determines qualifying times. While one might think that the Unlimited class would be less interesting without Monster Tajima and Rhys Millen in the mix, this year's grouping is perhaps more intriguing than ever.

After signing a liability waiver, attendees are welcomed to pop a squat before resting their arms atop a cool, flat metal platform hidden beneath a curved sheath that looks like something you may expect to see in Dr.

Well, Nissan has taken advantage of the creative minds of enthusiasts everywhere by crowdsourcing the build of a custom 370Z. Nothing was off limits for modification. The engine, wheels, tires, interior, and exterior were all subject to vote. Nissan even asked you what suspension to use.
The build is finally complete and Nissan is ready to show off the fruits of your choices. In stage one, Steven Lam and his team of fellow mechanics removed the front clip and hoses in order to pull the engine.

The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday announced that Google (GOOG) has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $22.5 million to settle charges that it misrepresented itself to users of Apple's (AAPL) Safari Web browser. What's the point of owning Samsung's shiny new flagship if you can't take it on tour. Well, prior to Verizon's Galaxy S III launch, customers were promised that global roaming would be enabled sometime in the future via an OTA update. That unspecified date has yet to come, but if it's something of a priority for you, XDA Developers forum member lair12 has discovered a way make it happen without Big Red's involvement. We feel we should add a warning here - switching from LTE to GSM isn't a simple process and goes far beyond a basic rooting (which, of course, is required).

Short of you going out and buying a disposable phone, there's an app for that. Dubbed Burner, this iPhone app basically provides you with a new phone number that's good for either 20 minutes, 60 text messages or seven days. After which you can press the "Burn" button in the app which will then wipe the number from Ad Hoc's (the company who developed the app) servers.

If the Retina Display on the new MacBook Pro has dazzled and blown you away, you might want to take into consideration the future. The Raspberry Pi faithful have been looking forward to the Gertboard almost as much as the main device itself: Gert van Loo's I/O extender promises to flash lights, spin motors and otherwise take on the tasks that the Raspberry Pi doesn't directly manage on its own. While we've seen work on the project since late 2011, the expansion now looks to be closer to reality following a fresh teaser. The refined design's biggest tweak is replacing its original PIC controller with an Arduino-powered chip - an element no doubt familiar to the crowd that would already be looking at a very hackable, miniature Linux computer.
