Sony Ericsson sales, net income slide in Q3; smartphones primary focus in 2012

Sony Ericsson reported its third-quarter results on Friday and while several figures suggest the company is on the upswing quarter-over-quarter, its net income and shipments were still down compared to the same quarter in 2010. The company shipped 9.5 million devices during the quarter, up 33% from the 7.6 million it shipped last quarter but down from the 10.4 million it shipped during the third quarter last year. It attributed the decline to fewer feature phone shipments as the company continues to pivot its focus to smartphones.

Huawei M835 Sanctioned by tokidoki arriving on MetroPCS

While MetroPCS may not be the bigger or most popular carrier in the US, they have recently introduced the Huawei M835 Sanctioned by tokidoki. For those unfamiliar, Huawei is a device manufacturer who is known for putting out budget-friendly handsets and tablets, while tokidoki is a Japanese-inspired lifestyle brand founded in Los Angeles, whose products feature designs similar to the one in the photo above. As far as hardware specs are concerned, don't expect this to go toe-to-toe with any of the mid-high end Android handsets.

Windows 8 Task Manager gets streamlined

Windows 8 Task Manager gets streamlined

One of the most common apps that we run in Windows has got to be the Windows Task Manager. It's everybody's favorite three-fingered salute which launches the definite go-to app when something's not quite right in Windows. The Windows 8 team did some research to find out what people used Task Manager for and it turns out that its most commonly used feature was to end programs and processes. Seeing how only a small amount of users actually bothered with the other tabs, in Windows 8 they've decided to hide them away and focus on killing apps instead. And that's what the Windows 8 Task Manager is going to be great at.

WISPR Vaporizer: Smoking Without the Smoke

WISPR Vaporizer: Smoking Without the Smoke

Could the WISPR make smoking cool again. The problem with being a smoker (apart from that whole early death thing) is that it is getting harder and harder to do. Gone are the days of firing up a fine Havana in a crowded restaurant, or sucking on a cigarette with your morning coffee. Smokers are forced to smoke outside, adding pneumonia and hypothermia to the list of risky diseases.

You probably won't convince anyone to let you use it on a plane, but you may be able to get away with smoke-free smoking using the surprisingly stylish WISPR vaporizer from Iolite.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has popped up in Verizon’s device management which simultaneously confirms not only that the device will be available for Big Red but it will be 4G LTE enabled and that it will be under the name “Galaxy Nexus.” Can’t say I remember where the “Prime” moniker originated from but I always liked the ring of that.

Most camera makers usually like to boast that their camera bodies are made out of more sturdy stuff than plastic, such as magnesium alloy which can be found on higher end models of certain DSLRs, but it looks like Sigma has taken it one step further by commissioning a camera whose body is made out of wood instead. The photo above is none other than Sigma's SD1 DSLR, whose casing is made out of Amboyna Burl, an expensive and decorative veneer taken from a tree found in Southeast Asia. It appears that each case takes about 60 hours of work to complete, which includes cutting, milling and polishing.

Motorola initially told customers that they would be soon sending out the Gingerbread update to many of its Droid devices. About a week later, the Droid Pro update was supposedly already heading out to users. This unfortunately was false, and started a summer of few Gingerbread updates for the Motorola devices mostly due to trouble with the software. Now, Motorola and Verizon are trying to make things right this fall, and they have just sent out the Gingerbread update for the Motorola Droid Pro. Samsung Galaxy Note 5.3 targeted at females?

Are having gender-targeted devices ever a good idea. Well, the folks over at HTC thought so when they released the HTC Rhyme (aka Bliss) and now it appears that Samsung is taking the Galaxy Note in the same direction. The 5.3″ device with the gorgeous Super AMOLED HD display is said to be targeted at the female market - simply because of its large size which is suitable for people carrying handbags. Apparently females find the idea of placing a 5.3″ device in their bags more appealing than a 10.1″ tablet, according to Samsung UK's sales director who recently spoke with T3.com.

Find My Friends iPhone App Released

Now that iOS 5 is in the wild (it has been in beta for months), Apple has released the Find My Friends app. The concept isn't new: this is an app that lets you locate your friends who willingly share their position temporarily, or at all times. While the idea and the technology have been investigated before, the actual implementation has not always been successful. In the past, I have used Glympse, which was the best app that I knew for doing exactly this.

Motorola announces the Lapdock 100, compatible with the Atrix 4G, Photon 4G, and Droid Bionic

When Motorola announced the Atrix 4G earlier this year, one of the unique selling points of the smartphone wasn't part of it, it was an accessory – the Lapdock. This netbook-like shell had a screen, a keyboard, and a big battery, and when you attached the Atrix it would turn to life, powered by the smartphone. Thus buying the Atrix as well as the Lapdock netted you an experience close to owning both a phone and a netbook. That was an interesting concept, and we're always happy to see manufacturers try to innovate by doing more than cramming more MHz into their processors.
