HTC Desire Gingerbread update coming this month

The thrilling story of the Gingerbread update on the HTC Desire will come to an end this month. After announcing the update, then denying it and then announcing it will be made available and then finally revealing that there will be some cutbacks made to the Sense UI in order to fit it on the Desire, HTC today announced on their Facebook page that the update will be made available this month. According to HTC, the testing on the device has gone well and that they will be able to roll out the update by the end of July.

7Digital app updated, now with Android lock-screen player controls

The latest Android release of the 7Digital music player has one very nice little feature built into it – an integrated player control that works from the Android lock screen. We were rather sceptical about how this may work on the various customised lock screens out there, so installed the thing to have a look. You'll need to sign in with a 7Digital account even to play music already on your SD card, but when you do….
…that's what it looks like on the Xperia Arc lock screen (left) and the HTC Desire lock screen (right). It basically opens the app's interface when you press standby.

Motorola Droid 3 for Verizon is finally announced

This is definitely not a surprise to us. After a series of rumors, including leaked tutorial videos, and a Chinese launch three weeks ago, the Motorola Droid 3 finally got officially announced for Verizon Wireless. You can already purchase the dual-core packing, Android Gingerbread device online, directly from Verizon. All you need to do is sign a two-year contract with a qualifying data plan, and give away 199.99 of your hard earned U.S. dollars. In case you are already a Verizon Wireless customer, the price of the smartphone sans contract is the highly affordable for a device of this stature $459.

Fly MC165 Dual SIM Phone

Coming in a candybar form factor, the MC165 is Fly's brand new dual SIM phone for the Russian market. The handset packs a 2.0-inch 176 x 220 65K color display, a 1.3MP camera, dual SIM card slots, two microSD card slots (up to 32GB each), an FM tuner, Bluetooth, a 3.5mm headset jack and works in GSM network. No less than four new BlackBerry smartphones are reportedly headed to Bell Canada, which is getting ready to launch them starting next month, much to the joy of hardcore BB fans who have been (probably) frustrated lately by the lack of new RIM handsets, and the Android invasion. First of all, we've got the officially announced BlackBerry Bold 9900, which should be released by Bell in late August. Also in late August, the carrier will likely introduce the BlackBerry Torch 9810, aka Torch 2 (featuring a sliding QWERTY keyboard, like the previous Torch model), and the BlackBerry Torch 9860 (a touch-only handset with a 3.7 inch screen).

There were moments when we wondered if Toshiba's Android Honeycomb tablet would ever see the light of day, but months after we caught a glimpse of prototype units at CES the slate now known as the Thrive has started showing up for sale at several retailers. We got word some Best Buy locations had units for sale earlier in the week, and it now looks like Newegg has begun selling Toshiba's baby. Toshiba is pushing this thing pretty hard, and from everything we have seen the Thrive won't disappoint those searching for a polished Android 3.0 device at a wallet-friendly price.

Is TabCo a viral marketing stunt by Nokia?

The folks over at My Nokia Blog recently received some interesting tips about the possibility of an upcoming tablet from Nokia. Apparently a company or a group named “Tab Co” has recently sprouted and has been dropping clues about a new tablet that's said to be different from all the other tablets available on the market now. Some people have speculated “TabCo” to be a fictional company made up by Nokia to generate interest for the tablet. The possibility is there but it's not certain.

So here's (a part of) the explanation why the Optimus 3D launch was delayed a bit. Apparently the company engineers have been doing some last-minute improvements to the 3D-loving smartphone camera. One of our readers in the UK contacted us, saying that his newly purchased LG Optimus 3D actually records 1080p videos at 30 fps, rather than the previously announced 24 fps.

Is China going to be the next Japan when it comes to the number of elderly folk getting around. Perhaps, as it is projected that by the time we are halfway through this decade, China's elderly population will make up nearly 20% in total – that's a cool 200 million. The Chinese Academy of Sciences decided that having robots around to provide care for the elderly is a brilliant idea, hence the HuiHui's development that might eventually see it serve in nursing homes, hospitals, and even around the home as a general nanny.

They say that patience is a virtue, but if you are a Nokia handset owner, then chances are you would have run low or even gone empty on your virtue “bank account” already by now. After all, folks who have long been waiting for the Symbian Anna update have been dealt with yet another blow – it will be delayed to sometime at the end of August. For those who see the glass as half full, what's waiting for another month when you've waited so long already. As for the rest, it might seem like a breach of good faith, especially at the recent Nokia Connection event, a definitive date was given.

Sprint's Motorola Photon 4G and Samsung Conquer 4G to be out this month?

Sprint's two upcoming 4G Android smartphones, the Motorola Photon and the Samsung Conquer, may both become available starting this month. The handsets appear on a leaked screenshot which suggests that the Samsung Conquer will arrive on July 24. We can't see any specific launch date for the Motorola Photon, but the image shows it should be also released sometime before the end of July.

Is the LG E906 the WP7 Mango refresh of the Optimus 7?

Some observant users have stumbled upon the official LG XML profile of an unannounced Windows Phone 7 device - the E906. This is most probably an E900 Optimus 7 refresh with Windows Phone 7 Mango. The XML profile of E906 is almost the same as the one of the E900 Optimus 7, but there are two differences - the model number and the browser version (E900 has IE7, while E906 is with IE9).

The iBamboo speaker is now officially funded over at Kickstarter, but in the event a hunk of bamboo in your living room clashes with your decor, head on over to etsy.com.  The seller YellowGlueBlues has a shop full of wooden speakers with the similar concept of amplifying the iPhone's speaker through a hollow wooden base.  His bases are made from maple, cherry, walnut, and spalted maple and finished with orange oil and wax.  Since the speaker docks can be made to order, he can customize the opening in order to fit older models of the iPhone as well as the iPad.

Qualcomm Snapdragon roadmap leaks, ARM processor versus desktop processor imminent

We've seen a few peeks at Qualcomm's next-gen Snapdragon chips before, codenamed Krait, but now we've got a proper roadmap, including time frames for release, model numbers, and even details about the memory channels. Glancing at the slide above doesn't reveal anything terribly surprising — the dual-core 8960 (LTE capable), 8270 (HSPA), and 8260A (HSPA+) will all be shipping to manufacturers later this quarter, in speeds ranging from 1.5GHz to 1.7GHz and come packing with the latest Adreno 225 GPU.

Travelnapp for Windows Phone 7 lets you sleep while you travel

After a long day of work, all you want to do is get on the train just so you can get some shut eye before you get home. But what if you're the kind of person who falls into a deep sleep and always misses the stop you're supposed to get off at. Well, James Mundy, a Physics student at Sheffield University has come up with a solution to the problem and it's called Travelnapp. Travelnapp is a unique alarm clock that doesn't wake you up after a set time - instead, it makes use of your GPS sensor to know when to go off. All you have to do is just set it up to wake you up whenever you're a certain distance away from a location.
