Rumor: Vodafone considering purchasing RIM?

Rumor: Vodafone considering purchasing RIM?

RIM's been having quite a rough time as of late. Once the king of smartphones, the company has floundered as other companies entered the market and found success. Then, Research In Motion tried its hand at the tablet market, and that didn't go so well either. The PlayBook launched to mostly tepid reviews and is currently on sale at many major electronics stores. But are things bad enough that RIM is considering selling up?

The Independent reports that RIM shares have shot up amid speculation that the company is shopping about for a buyer and could be purchased by Vodafone PLC.

Former Chrysler CEO Nardelli backpedals on bailout comments

Former Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli has performed a curt about face on his comments about the Obama Administration's handling of the auto bailout. The Detroit News reports that Nardelli said that he believes the administration made the correct decision for Chrysler in an email to the publication. Nardelli didn't go so far as to deny his earlier statements, but said that he understood why the government chose the path it took in the situation. He continued on to say that Chrysler was very appreciative of the government's understanding and assistance.

Sprint: 15 CDMA/LTE Smartphones, Tablets and Datacards Coming in 2012

Sprint: 15 CDMA/LTE Smartphones, Tablets and Datacards Coming in 2012

Sprint mentioned a nice nugget of information at the end of their main device strategy briefing for the new 4G LTE network they've announced. 15 new CMDA/LTE smartphones, tablets and datacards will be coming in 2012 as they look to provide devices for consumers to take advantage of the new network right away. This is a huge goal compared to other carriers who usually only have a handful of capable non-hotspot and non-modem devices within a year of launching their networks. Motorola is confirmed to be a major provider of a 4G phone for Sprint in 2012 and we're sure many others are in line.

Brothers In Arms 2: Global Front FREE Edition – Coming Soon To The Android Market

Gameloft is finally bringing their hit WWII first-person shooter Brothers In Arms 2: Global Front to the Android Market. The game actually launched back in February for iOS devices and soon after was ported to Android. The only problem was the game was offered up exclusively on Gameloft’s site for $5. If you’re anything like me — I like to keep my app purchases to the Android Market. Gameloft has this funny policy of not allowing you to transfer your game to new devices. Well, the good news is you can put your wallet away because Gameloft will be rewarding patient buyers by offering the game for download free of charge.

McLaren slows MP4-12C production over quality woes

Autoweek reports that McLaren is slowing down production of the company's MP4-12C due to quality concerns. The automaker is currently working on fixes to small problems like condensation in the vehicle's headlights, door functionality and an electrical issue that causes the battery to go dead over time. McLaren is refuting reports that the quality issues are safety or performance related in any way. Instead, the company says that production is being slowed to correct issues that are arising on vehicles already out in the wild. In the case of the battery, McLaren engineers believe that the problem stems from the audio head unit.

Today is a busy day for Nexus Prime - it's been all over the news more than twice. Just hours earlier, we told you about a 'trusted source' who told BGR the phone's key specifications. Well, they may turn out to be completely and utterly wrong. We were contacted by a tipster from inside Google, who claims to be familiar with the next Nexus phone and he basically put the previously speculated specs to sleep. As usual, tips like these are to be taken with a pinch of salt, but for now we're buying what this guy's selling.

One of the newer titles on PSN would be Shank 2, where the developer has touted sharper graphics to please your eyes in addition to a new co-op system that makes gaming a whole lot more fun. The entire art team comprises of professional animators and painters from the 2D animation industry, with Jeff Agala directing the visuals to bring you a totally new gaming experience as though you were playing a cartoon. To achieve such a realistic effect, the resolution of all the source character art was doubled in order to introduce a graphic novel style when gaming, as well as increasing the amount of animation in the game by two times.

HTC ups the ante even more for Android-powered smartphones with their latest addition to the Sensation family, which is the aptly named Sensation XL. After all, to have a smartphone ship with a 4.7″ touchscreen display is saying something – and this Beats outfitted device will certainly appeal to those who have entertainment on-the-go at the very top of their minds. This will be the third Android smartphone from HTC that bears the Sensation moniker, which means HTC is probably taking a page out of Samsung's book by releasing a range of devices using a similar brand presence, case in point, the Galaxy family.

As an Engadget reader, you'll gain extra street cred if you're using an iPhone and, well, a non-iPhone at the same time; or maybe you've got all your media content on an iPod instead of having everything on your non-Apple smartphone. Either way, this means that you'd need to carry at least two types of cables for emergency charging on the go. To save the hassle, PANS Ltd. from Japan has come up with a neat solution: Umiushi Smapho 2800, which is apparently the industry's first external battery with a built-in iPod dock connector and a micro-USB plug, both of which can be used simultaneously to sip on the 2,800mAh reservoir with 5V 1A output.

The little things

The little things

. While I don't have a story to tell about Steve Jobs and myself, I do have a personal story. Years ago, actually almost five years ago now, I posted that I had heard from a close source of mine that Apple was set to release an “all new” MacBook, and it was most likely the ultra-portable laptop that was rumored to be in the works. I got the information from someone close to me, and he got the information from someone with first-hand knowledge of the device. Basically, Apple had requested that a popular music group at the time play at its holiday party.

AA launches first electric/hybrid vehicle training course

AA launches first electric/hybrid vehicle training course

Driving a hybrid/electric vehicle isn't the same as driving a regular fuel-powered vehicle. The point of hybrids and EVs is to minimize the use of fuel, which is not only greener but could potentially be more efficient in terms of mileage, although the latter seems to apply more to hybrids than EVs which have a set range before needing to charge. Either way, with hybrids and EVs possibly being the choice of vehicles in the future, the AA DriveTech Academy in the UK has launched a training course aimed at hybrid and EV drivers.

So if you're sick of yelling over the sound of traffic to your buddies, Free2Move has released a Bluetooth communications system that was designed for cyclists in mind.

Could bamboo resin be a good alternative to carbon fiber for cars?

Could bamboo resin be a good alternative to carbon fiber for cars?

The quest for ever-better lightweight manufacturing materials has led one electric vehicle builder to consider using woven bamboo fiber and vegetable resin in the place of costly carbon fiber or heavy fiberglass. The material is already being put to use in the surfboard industry, and Greg Abbott, a guy who spends his days converting internal-combustion vehicles to EVs, says that in the future, EV kits may have bodies that use bamboo for their body structure.

Robot peels grape

Robot peels grape

We know that doctors and surgeons can end up pretty emotionally devastated especially when they are too involved in a patient's life only to have that patient's life slip through their hands despite giving it his/her best shot. Well, while humans need some time off or a break to get away from it all, robots on the other hand do not suffer from any form of fatigue or emotional stress. Why then, should a robot take a break (apart from maintenance purposes, of course). Well, perhaps doing something different for a robot might lead to it being applied in different departments or areas of industry.

Watch this couch go over 100 mph for a world record

Question: When is a couch not really a couch. Answer: When that couch is powered by an internal combustion engine. Or when you need a full leather race suit, gloves, boots and a helmet to sit on it. Or when it requires an attached front desk to serve as an aerodynamic element. Or when you need an airport runway to take it up to its full top speed.
Regardless of our reasoning, there is apparently a record being held for the World's Fastest Couch.

Andy Rubin Reminisces 2007, Notices Kid Wanted His Phone to Make “Ice Cream” [Video]

Our friend Andy Rubin, the father of Android, took to Google+ with a heartwarming thought and video. In 2007, Google released a promo for the Open Handset Alliance. It featured a group of kids telling what they'd want in a phone. Many different things came up. Pizza, cookies, robots – all the usual kid stuff.

One kid even said Cupcake (wink wink) and Andy then points out that at the very end a kid was drawing an ice cream cone and said he wanted three scoops. How awesome.

Not really news, per se, but considering the context (the announcements we expect Google to make next week) we'll take every bit that we can get.

Had any doubts Samsung would stick to their word and be more aggressive against Apple in this patent war. Business Week is reporting that Samsung has taken to Milan, Italy and Paris, France courts to file patent infringement claims against Apple and to seek bans on the iPhone 4S for these infringements. They’re citing two patents that deal with wireless technology, likely those that have to do with 3G data.

Apple Launches 30-Pin to USB iPhone Adapter for EU Compliance

Apple Launches 30-Pin to USB iPhone Adapter for EU Compliance

Easy to use, and easy to lose: the Apple iPhone Micro USB Adapter. Last year, the European Commission decreed that all future cellphones would have but one kind of charger. No longer would we see different cables for Nokia, Sony, Samsung. Instead, there would be one charger to rule them all: Micro USB.

Which of course led everybody to wonder if Apple would play ball. There was of course no way that it would drop its proprietary 30-pin dock connector, so how would it comply with EU rules?

With a dongle, of course. Over in Europe, you can now buy an adapter which will let you charge your iPhone (or other iOS device) with a Micro USB cable.
