VisiJax turns you into one big bicycle warning system

Anyone who's ever done any bike riding in a big city knows that it's one of the more harrowing experiences of modern society. So, why not protect yourself as much as humanly possible. The VisiJax electronic cycling jacket seems like a pretty solid start. The neon-colored waterproof windbreaker features some 23 LEDs worth of butt-saving protection, with white lights on the front and red on the rear. The iMASS active signaling system, meanwhile, detects when the cyclist lifts his or her arm and triggers the corresponding turn signal. The jacket runs on three AAA batteries, which should give you around 200 hours of use.

Steve Jobs Biographer: Yes, Jobs Really Did Hate Android

Steve Jobs Biographer: Yes, Jobs Really Did Hate Android

Don’t let the sweet, sugar coated words of Google’s CEO Larry Page fool you. Steve Jobs really did hate Android and yes, he wanted to destroy it. This was reaffirmed by “Steve Jobs” author, Walter Isaacson who spoke at the Royal Institution a few nights ago. Isaacson explained that, contrary to Larry Page’s sentiments that Steve Jobs’ anger was “just for show,” the hate was, in fact, very real and began when — according to Jobs –  Apple’s devices were copied “verbatim” by Google’s own mobile OS.

Google updates Gmail's 'people widget,' now includes previous images

When it comes to an ideal conduit for minor announcements, Google's found a home on its very own social network. And this time, it's telling the world about a small update to the people widget - that bar currently occupying real estate on the right-hand side of gmail.com. Along with showing the pertinent contact information from an email chain's participants, the peep widge will now reveal the last three images sent to you by the displayed contacts. As one might expect, clicking on the pics will whisk you to its associated email, and provide a little extra context to that candid, landscape or Lolcat you're staring at.

Take the smartphone camera sensor that was the toast of MWC, add in the burgeoning Windows Phone platform and this might be what you might get. Although we hope - and suspect - that it isn't. Sneaking out from China with some judicious pixelation, the phones look pretty. dynamic. With a profile more often associated with those tough, rubberized feature phones, the color gamut of black, magenta and yellow is at least very new-generation Nokia. But, if the concept hardware wasn't incredulous enough, wait 'til you hear the specs.

AT&T Pantech Crossover Android 2.3 Gingerbread update now available

Back in May of last year, AT&T introduced the Pantech Crossover, an Android smartphone featuring a full physical side-sliding QWERTY keyboard. Up until today, the Crossover has been stuck running Android 2.2 Froyo. However, if you own one of these, here's some good news. The update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread is now available to download and install. Unfortunately though, it won't arrive over-the-air. You'll need a Windows application to install the update, and yes, your Crossover will need to be connected to a Windows PC for it to work.

If you don't mind that though, the process is pretty straightforward.

Transformer Prime owners will receive free dongle from Asus to fix GPS issues for good

Not content with consistently being one of the first companies to issue updates to the newest versions of Android for its products, Asus wants to have a definite place in the hearts of the owners of its Transformer Prime tablet. Ever since that device launched, the people who bought it have been complaining about poor GPS reception. And despite Asus' best efforts to cure this via software updates, the problems are still there to this day. That's because the reason why the Prime's GPS is wonky doesn't have to do with software, but with the aluminum material that the tablet is made out of.

HTC wins patent for Face Unlock

HTC wins patent for Face Unlock

HTC has basically been granted a patent on Face Unlock. This is interesting, because that feature was first added to Android by Google, in its 4.0 release. It has subsequently made its way onto the very few devices that have so far been updated to Android Ice Cream Sandwich, but also to the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S and the Samsung i8150 Galaxy W via ‘value pack' updates recently. That creates a rather strange situation in the Android world. While it's really unlikely that HTC would use this patent against Google, things aren't as certain when it comes to direct competitors such as Samsung.

The good news: Google has started testing those augmented reality glasses we heard about earlier in the year. The bad news: if the artsy shots of the test units are to be believed, they won't make you look like some '80s cinematic anti-hero. In fact, the things wouldn't look too out of place in a New York Times style story. The software giant let it be known that, while it hasn't quite got a sale date on the wearables, it's ready to test ProjectGlass amongst the non-augmented public.

WhatsApp founder says he doesn't want to hurt carriers, much

Given how much the world has already noticed that instant messaging can be cheaper than SMS, it's surprising to see the founder of WhatsApp trying to persuade carriers that he's actually doing them a favor. In an interview with Reuters, Brian Acton said that his messaging service is "facilitating a broad movement to data plans," from which carriers "stand to benefit quite substantially." While it's certainly true that smartphones and data plans make nice margins for operators, Acton's thesis also slithers around some slightly inconvenient evidence.
