Late 2012 iPad carries new PowerVR SGX 554MP4 graphics, muscles ahead in video speed

It's well established that the A6X chip in the fourth-generation iPad is about twice as fast as its predecessor in pure number crunching, but how about those reportedly doubled graphics amid some increasingly fierce competition. Thanks to some help from Kishonti, AnandTech has learned that Apple may still have an ace up its sleeve. The new tablet carries a new, quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4 with twice the raw potential as the already quick 543MP4 graphics in the A5X.

Facebook gets serious in educating its new users

Facebook is a phenomenon. Since it launched in 2004, the insanely-popular social networking service has amassed a total number of one billion users, and that number continues to grow as of this writing. So it would make a lot of sense if Facebook decides to improve the privacy education for its users, especially the new ones. Today, Facebook is announcing that it will be rolling out a more detailed educational privacy information for new users, thanks to the feedback it has received from the Irish Data Protection Commissioner's Office.
The company says that the updates will be made visible to new users beginning today.

Back in 2011, Panasonic announced their plans to launch smartphones outside of Japan. For those wondering, for the most part Japanese brands like Sharp, Fujitsu and Panasonic have typically sold their smartphones within the Japanese market, although once in a blue moon we do see those devices pop up in international markets. Unfortunately it looks like despite Panasonic's plans to start making a splash globally with their own brand of smartphones, the company has announced that they will be halting the sale of their smartphones in Europe.

While the computers have gone through many advances in technology, the input peripherals such as the PC mouse used to navigate around the PC screen has largely remain the same. Although there are now some wireless varieties available, there is no new device that is expected to replace this long-standing peripheral. But that may be about to change with the development of the Leap. The Leap is a unique device that allows users to navigate through the display screen and issue action commands by simply using gestures in the air.

While I find it nigh impossible to believe that leaving a typewriter in the room with a bunch of monkeys would eventually see one of the Bard's sonnets typed out (an experiment was run in the past to debunk such an idea), it is not too hard to see us humans are extremely intelligent compared to primates. For instance, when you leave OLPCs with a bunch of Ethiopian kids without any knowledge of it, all it took was just 5 months to hack the device. Diesel Power sets land speed towing record at 141.998 mph

There are more land speed record categories than we care to count, but the minds at Diesel Power recently tackled one of the more interesting and obscure titles in the realm: the record for the fastest vehicle towing a trailer. That meant the team would need to exceed the 139.11 mph barrier set by the previous record holder. To do that, they whipped up a GMC 2500 HD with over 1,000 horsepower and a two-stage nitrous set up. The trailer itself also required a bit of tweaking, and the crew ditched the standard wheel and tire combination for some V-rated rubber.

According to the local news publication De Telegraaf, a group called Dutch Cyclists Union are deeply interested in installing underground pipes on their pavements to keep them accessible and usable for the public. Heated bike paths will not only mean that the pavements are snow-free, it will also reduce road accidents and encourage more people to ride their bikes on what is considered to be the bicycle capital of the world. Among the towns in Netherlands considering the ingenious plan are Utrecht and the town of Zutphen.

Sensor for the naked eye detects early-stage diseases

Sensor for the naked eye detects early-stage diseases

Scientists from the Imperial College London were able to develop an ultra-sensitive sensor that will allow doctors to detect the early stages of diseases with their naked eye. The newly developed sensor, which is still a prototype, is reportedly ten times more sensitive than the current methods today. This allows doctors to detect the onset of diseases such as prostate cancer and other virus infections, and even HIV. Essentially, the sensor works by analyzing serum, a protein-rich liquid that separates when blood coagulates. Positive and negative reactions can then be viewed easily by the naked eye.

This Amazing Time-Lapse Shows How Twitchy Jumbo Jets Really Are

Here's a great use of time-lapse photography to show a side of aviation that is rarely seen. This is a procession of jumbo jets (B747, A340, B777) flying into Heathrow airport in London. Since it's a time-lapse video, it's sped up 17x faster than normal, and as a result you see the jets jumping in a way that doesn't inspire confidence (although flying is actually very safe). Also, the moving clouds in the background give you a sensation of a constantly moving camera. It's hypnotic, and I never before realized to what extent that planes line up to land.
