Nouveau open source NVIDIA driver goes stable, gets benchmarked

Nouveau, the open source graphics driver for NVIDIA GPUs is finally taking off the stabilizers, wandering out from the staging area, and being accepted as part of the standard stable kernel set-up. The project began nearly six years ago, so it's been a long road, but one that has earned it favor in certain corners of the Linux world. Things started gaining traction in the last three years as more and more distros started adopting, and Mr Linux himself, Linus Torvalds, suggested it be part of the kernel. Want to see how it performs.

Watch this Vietnamese policeman go a wild ride after stopping a bus

Well, this looks Hanoi-ing. Vietnamese traffic lieutenant Nguyen Manh Phan pulled over a bus driver in Hanoi for driving on the wrong side of the road. Instead of cooperating, the driver refused to show his papers and decided instead to flee the scene.
The officer, though, wasn't keen on seeing driver Phung Hong Phuong get away so easily, so he positioned himself in front of the bus.

Chevy to yank all 11 Indycar engines after testing failure, controversy ensues

The Associated Press reports General Motors has pulled all 11 Chevrolet IndyCar engines from testing after racer James Hinchcliffe blew one during testing at Sonoma. GM evidently was concerned enough about the 10 other engines having similar problems that it decided to swap them all and face the resulting sanctions. Under IndyCar's current rules, Hinchcliffe, driver of the GoDaddy.com will be penalized for the failure despite the fact that it had nothing to do with the driver. IndyCar prohibits engine changes until the units have reached a minimum of 1,200 miles, a figure that is set to jump to 1,850 miles after this weekend.

Portuguese opposition party wants 'terabyte tax,' voters want a new opposition party

Portugal's opposition party,Partido Socialista, is pondering a tax on storage media under the flag of copyright protection. Under the proposal, consumers would pay €0.2 for every gigabyte of storage purchased, so a 1TB HDD would cost around €21 ($28) extra, plus an additional levy on devices over that size means a 2TB drive could cost an additional €103.2 ($135). It doesn't just stop at desktop platters: USB sticks, memory cards and even smartphones would also be charged, with any device packing 64GB of storage facing a surcharge of €32 ($42).

HTC’s not letting the Desire brand die, it seems, as they have introduced three brand new phones for the Chinese market. We’re looking at the Desire VT T328t, VC T328d, and V 328w. Confusing, no. The devices are very similar and each one will be going to its own Chinese carrier. The first, VT T328t, is headed straight for China Mobile with a 4 inch display, Android 4.0, HTC Sense 4.0, a 1GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera and more.

The other two (VC T328d-China Telecom, and the V328w-China Unicom) are the same, save for design and their ability to host dual SIM cards.

With Nokia having spent a rumored $150 million for advertising and promotional endeavors in the US, it seems like the company did not just stop there with even more money spanning across the globe to pay for a video that went viral by Nokia Russia. From this subtle but hilarious stunt we can see that Nokia is not afraid of using "guerilla" promotional style to get the word about the New Lumia phones out and about. In any case it was much better than poking fun at an iPhone that has now been replaced by a new one because of a certain antennagate issue by calling it the 'Death Grip'.

J.D. Power and Associates created the Power Information Network (PIN) in 1993 to collect and analyze dealer transactions on new and used cars. Power uses the data from more than 10,000 dealerships to "improve business for automotive dealers, manufacturers, lenders, and other companies in the industry." The wider use of consumer data captured at the point-of-sale is what concerns dealers, and it's probably that reasoning which has led to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) partnering with J.D. Richmond police will now wake you up at night if you leave valuables in your car

We don't envy local law enforcement, especially in a city like Richmond, Virginia. Charged with keeping the public safe from a variety of ill forces, the job is about as thankless as they come. Recently, the RPD has adopted a new initiative in an attempt to curb vehicle break-ins. Officers on the night shift now check vehicles for valuables left in plain sight, and when they find them, the police stop by the vehicle's owner's home for a little chat. All of these "wake up calls" are most likely to occur between midnight and 4:00 a.m.
