AT&T approves BlackBerry Bridge

AT&T approves BlackBerry Bridge

Before the BlackBerry PlayBook was released, it was mentioned that the tablet will need to pair up with another BlackBerry device in order to make use of certain functions such as checking emails and accessing the calendar on the tablet. While every other carrier had no problems with letting its subscribers make use of the app that provided the functionality (BlackBerry Bridge), AT&T didn't. This meant that AT&T BlackBerry users who bought a PlayBook weren't able to make full use of the tablet out of the box - it was as good as not having a BlackBerry in the first place.

NICHE APP: Release Mako

NICHE APP: Release Mako

It's been a while since we spotted a nice NICHE Android app out there, so how about Release Mako – it lets users “report live releases of shortfin mako sharks from Android mobile devices while still on the water”. It has a nice, happy subtext to it, with fishermen who accidentally catch sharks able to report the release of a live one and the coordinates where it happened. Supporting sustainable fishing through Android. Everyone's happy, especially the sharks.

Good luck correctly sexing a mako shark.

The Tech Inside Apple's $50 Thunderbolt Cable

The Tech Inside Apple's $50 Thunderbolt Cable

By Chris Foresman, Ars Technica. The first Thunderbolt compatible peripherals - Promise's Pegasus RAIDs - started shipping on Tuesday. Using the RAIDs with a Thunderbolt equipped Mac, though, requires a rather expensive $50 cable that is only available from Apple. We dug into the design of the cable to find out why Apple felt justified in charging $50 for some plastic-wrapped copper wire, and why Thunderbolt may have a hard time gaining traction outside of the higher-end storage and video device market - a fate similar to Apple's FireWire.

Promise's RAIDs do not come supplied with a Thunderbolt cable.

Tron Inspired Concept Phone Of The Future

Tron Inspired Concept Phone Of The Future

Are you a huge Tron fan. If you are what do you think of this Tron inspired concept phone. Designed by Raul Galindo, the phone tries to keep to its "futuristic" look by only measuring 7mm in thickness, with a 4-inch touch screen display. Granted that the 4-inch display isn't exactly futuristic (we kind of expected holographic images to pop up), the design is.

The Success of Google+ Very Much Depends on its Mobile Implementation

The Success of Google+ Very Much Depends on its Mobile Implementation

As you have heard by now, Google seems to have reached the conclusion that it is time they created their own Facebook. No, I do not mean their own social network, I mean their own Facebook. Google+, at least on first glance is a carbon copy of Facebook. It looks the same, it acts the same, it uses the same terminology, and most users who first access Google+ end up asking the same question, "Why use this as opposed to just using Facebook".
After spending some time on the new social platform, there are a few obvious things that stick out.

Cell phones have become the modern Tamagotchi

Cell phones have become the modern Tamagotchi

A researcher at Kansas State University found that mobile phones tend to primarily act as passive entertainment devices rather than serve the purpose of a anytime-anywhere communication device. The focus group of the research was rather limited with the population of the university campus being adults between the ages of 19 and 24. Esther Sweeney's research determined that mobile phones are very personal products and the individual ownership is “a big deal” for their owners. Phones are not shared and have become key entertainment devices, which is not very surprising.

Leaked Photos Of The Nokia 700 “Zeta”

A couple of days ago we had reported that Nokia was looking to push out four new Symbian handsets, which would be powered by 1GHz processors. Well as it turns out, one of those handsets on the list, the Nokia 700 “Zeta”, had its photos leaked, giving us an idea of what we might expect from the final product (assuming of course, that the leaked photos are not the final product). The Nokia 700 “Zeta” was meant as to be the successor to the Nokia C6-01, and it will be running on Symbian Belle, the successor to Symbian Anna.

Just days before the start of the 2011 Tour de France, bike manufacturer Cervélo has announced its newest model, the S5. Though aggressively aerodynamic, the carbon-fiber S5 is not a triathlon bike. It's made for road racing, and it will be under the riders of team Garmin-Cervelo when they line up on July 2 at Passage du Gois for the start of the three-week, 2,132-mile race.
Wired was the first media outlet of any kind to get a look at the S5, let alone ride it, which we did this spring.

Pandora integration comes to the 2012 Scion xB

The 2012 Scion xB will begin rolling into dealerships next month, and while there's not much in the way of upgrades to the exterior, interior or powertrain, two new stereo options are included in the boxy package. The standard xB's Pioneer head unit is now equipped with HD Radio, allowing stations to broadcast multiple audio feeds over one frequency. If nothing's playing to suit your tastes, standard Bluetooth audio streaming is included in the package, along with hands-free phone connectivity and USB audio support for iPods, iPhones and other MP3 players.

Toy Story 4 in the works?

Toy Story 4 in the works?

. Great news for fans of Toy Story. If you were disappointed that the last movie had to end and you thought that the magical journey was over - there might be a new movie in the works. Voice actor for Woody, Tom Hanks, was quoted as saying to the BBC: “I think there will be, yeah. Yeah, yeah, think they're working on it now. There you go.”

While the actor's statement is by no means an official confirmation of the sequel really happening, we wonder if the fourth movie is necessary at all. The series tied up everything pretty well with the third installment, and there's really no need for a sequel.

Ascom Care Phone, What is It?

The Ascom Care Phones offers a secure line of communication with the outside world for home bound individuals. It includes a wireless pendant (Class I approved) that can be worn around the neck/on the body within the home or close neighbourhood and a base unit. To secure this wireless connection, a link test option tests the connection between wireless pendent and the base unit on a regular basis. The patented dual-frequency function from a pendent ensures that alarm signals are received. If the alarm is sent and not received successfully, the wireless transmitter will send it again using another frequency until it is received.

Three UK HTC Desire HD Android 2.3 Gingerbread update now rolling out

Three UK HTC Desire HD Android 2.3 Gingerbread update now rolling out

Good news if you are in the UK and your smartphone of choice is an HTC Desire HD bought from Three. The operator has announced via Twitter earlier today that the update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread for Desire HD smartphones it sold has started rolling out over-the-air. Since this is an OTA update, there's nothing special you need to do, and no computer is necessary to get the new Gingerbread bits onto your phone. The handset will just notify you when the update has become available for it, and you can choose to download and install. That's basically it.

The usual common sense reminders apply, though.

Sometimes in life, there are more than meets the eye – never mind that I will be watching Transformers: Dark of the Moon in a few hours' time, but for other times, what we see is not as high-tech as we originally thought. Case in point, this robot security kiosk that you see here. While it looks tall at nearly 2 meters atop its podium, it will rely on a head mounted camera as well as facial recognition software before letting you pass through, after you swipe your ID card, that is.

Microsoft may integrate eavesdropping in Skype

Microsoft may integrate eavesdropping in Skype

Microsoft has filed a patent that describes a “legal intercept” of VoIP communications. What does that means. Filed in December 2009, the document was created when Microsoft may have had no intentions of acquiring Skype, but the company makes clear statements that it applies to Skype and similar services.
According to the patent – and it is just an application at this point – Microsoft envisions a variety of possibilities to use “recording agents” as a way to intercept, monitor, record and store recorded calls. The agent could be placed in a router, call server, or within the network of an organization.
