Jeep recalling nearly 1M Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs over airbag fault

A recall has been issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for select model year Jeep Grand Cherokee models and Liberty vehicles over airbag concerns. The recall extends to 2002-2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002-2003 Liberty models, affecting nearly a million vehicles worldwide. The central recall issue is a faulty sensor in the airbag control module that may result in the inadvertent deployment of front or side curtain airbags while vehicle is in motion. This obviously has the potential to be quite dangerous.

Specifically, Liberty vehicles built between January 9, 2001, and March 28, 2003 are in question.

Design firm Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure have teamed up to introduce ideas for a so-called "Smart Highway" which was recently named the Best Future Concept at the Dutch Design Awards. Urine-powered generator developed by teenagers showcased at Maker Faire Africa 2012

Four African teenage girls were able to develop a urine-powered generator. 14-year olds Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, and Faleke Oluwatoyin together with 15-year old Bello Eniola, showcased their unique innovation at this year's Maker Faire Africa held in Lagos, Nigeria. The system works by pouring urine into an electrolytic cell to separate the hydrogen. The filtered hydrogen then goes into a water filter for purification where it then be pushed into a gas cylinder.

Have you ever had the joyful task of trying to figure out which of the smoke alarms in your home is chirping due to a low battery. The chirps happen infrequently, so unless you have a small house with only a couple detectors, it's tough to figure out which one it's coming from. My house is medium size (less than 2000 sq ft), but we have at least 6 smoke alarms scattered throughout the house. Jeanne is usually the one who decides when it's time to replace all the batteries.  We then drag a step stool around the house making the swaps. Many years ago I was changing a smoke alarm battery and stepped off the bed and severely sprained my ankle.

Stealing gas is a bad idea. Using a homemade electrically-powered device to steal gas from other people's cars is a very bad idea. Mesa, Arizona police say Herbert C. Ridge was doing just that when his spark of innovation actually sparked and ignited the fuel being siphoned. According to reports, Ridge's shirt caught fire and he rolled in the street in an effort to extinguish the flames. Having no luck, Ridge, still on fire, raced back to his truck for a getaway attempt.

Getting into a vehicle while on fire is not, by the way, a recommended method of extinguishing flames.

Introduction. One of the first devices to draw our attention at this year's Computex event was this particular NAS unit. Generally speaking, Shuttle had a lovely booth and this KD20 was one of the central pillars to draw a crowd.
Obviously skeptical, as we've tested plenty of 2 bay units from the veterans in the past, we couldn't just resist inquiring about their new junior in the NAS game. 30 minutes and a full tour of the booth later, we decided we just had to test it.

US Cellular takes hit on LTE devices, profits halved to $35.5 million in Q3 2012

US Cellular's latest figures show that while the network saw its revenues remain constant, net profits fell by nearly half compared to the same period last year. It coined $35.5 million in net profit this quarter, down from the $62.1 million it made in Q3 2011 despite bringing in $1.04 billion in turnover both times. The cause of this reduced profitability is said to be down to higher subsidies on LTE devices, which represented a full 50 percent of the company's smartphone sales in the quarter. While the carrier has reversed the trend of losing customers, it only managed to add a rather measly 9,000 new customers in the three-month period.

Nikon D5200 for the US market might only make an appearance in January 2013

A couple of days ago the Nikon D5200 was officially announced, and while this might be good news for those living in Europe, Asia and Australia, oddly enough there was no mention as to when this newly announced DSLR camera would be making its way stateside. HTC and Verizon have sent media invites for a mysterious event in New York City on November 13. Of course, given that Verizon is involved, it would make sense if this was for the announcement of the HTC Droid DNA, also known as the HTC DLX (“deluxe”), which is 5″ Android device which would compete with the Galaxy Note 2 from Samsung.  The HTC Droid DNA is currently rumored to be available in December. Instagram is getting ready to open up its collection of filtered images to the web. The photosharing service announced via blog post that it's going to be rolling out web profiles over the next few days, bringing profile photos, bios and shared images to easily navigable URLs at instagram.com/[username]. If you have photos set to private, you'll still get a profile, but those images won't be shared with the web at large. The site also notes that web uploading isn't currently enabled, seeing as how it's always been focused on mobile devices. If you don't have a page yet, you should be good to go within the week.
