AT&T HTC One X not part of HTC's bootloader unlocking program

The AT&T version of the very impressive HTC One X will be landing in US tomorrow on May 6. Unfortunately, even before customers can get their hands on the phone, there is a disappointing bit of news waiting for them. When The Verge reached out to HTC regarding the bootloader on the One X, which, as noticed by MoDaCo, is locked, the company responded by saying that due to some restrictions, the bootloader on the One X will not be unlockable.
As you may know, an unlocked bootloader is necessary for anyone wishing to experiment with custom ROMs on their Android devices.

2012 One Lap Of America starts today

Yes, it's spring time in Indiana, and although Jim Nabors won't be singing ahead of the drop of the green flag, it's time for another One Lap of America. Having been part of the timing and scoring team for well over a decade, we tend to see a lot of the same faces and sheetmetal year in and year out, though there's always a steady stream of newcomers. Every few races, however, there seems to be a bumper crop of new cars that show up as old ones get tired and drivers find something different to play with. This is clearly one of those times, perhaps brought about by the dominance of the Nissan GTR over the last several years.

Happy ‘International Day Against DRM'

. The Free Software Foundation has created a campaign in an effort to eliminate digital rights management (DRM) and embrace DRM-free media. “While DRM has largely been defeated in downloaded music, it is a growing problem in the area of eBooks, where people have had their books restricted so they can't freely loan, re-sell or donate them, read them without being tracked, or move them to a new device without re-purchasing all of them,” the campaign's website reads. “They've even had their eBooks deleted by companies without their permission.

Volvo releases details on ever-so-slightly updated 2013 XC90

It's hard to believe that the Volvo XC90 has been on the market since 2003. That's 10 model years ago, predating our own existence as a website. Even the XC90 mid-cycle refresh that happened in 2007 seems like an eternity ago. So it stands to reason that for 2013 Volvo would introduce. yet another year of the same old thing.

Well, not exactly. The 2013 XC90 has been "delightfully refreshed," though we're pretty sure that the color-coordinated exterior and LED daytime running lights were actually introduced last year.

How to make a giant paper Bugatti Veyron

Chances are, we'll never be able to park a Bugatti Veyron in our own personal garage. It's sad, we know. Fortunately for us, the crew at Visual Spicer have worked up a little something special to ease the pain: Behold a 2.5-foot long papercraft Veyron. The project soaks up 44 pages of 8.5x11-inch printer paper and encompasses a whopping 159 parts. Needless to say, sticking this thing together is going to take some time. And ink.

The good news is, the templates are entirely free, which means we'll be commandeering the dining room table for construction purposes in sweet little time.

Nintendo patent application tech tracks your DS from above, serves as tour guide

Nintendo is already guiding you through the Louvre with a 3DS, but a newly published US patent application takes that kind of tourism to a very literal new level. Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto's concept describes a way to direct lost tourists by beaming position information through an overhead grid of infrared transmitters to a mobile device (portrayed as a DS Lite) held by the confused visitor below. The handheld then talks wirelessly to a server that lights up floor displays with maps and directions, and a helpful app on the device lets visitors pick their route while they read up on sightseeing tips.

Text editing on the iPad is a bit of a slog unless you have a dedicated keyboard. One Daniel Hooper, however, has a simple but clever idea to fix this: use the keyboard as a pseudo-trackpad. As he shows in the prototype video below, his idea has touchscreen typists just drag one or two fingers along the keyboard to whip through text. Need to select something. Hold the Shift key while you swipe.

If you were planning on getting your hands on either the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 or the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, you might be interested to hear that Samsung has since released the source code for both devices. So how does this affect you as an end-user, you might ask. Well the release of the source code will allow developers from the hardworking Android community to cook up some interesting ROMs and mods for your tablet. This will allow you, as an end-user, to drop the Samsung TouchWiz UI in favor of something else along with other features that could enhance your tablet experience.

Motorola DROID X2 receiving firmware OTA 1.3.418?

Some weirdness is going on with the Motorola DROID X2, it seems. We know Motorola was prepared to begin soak tests for a maintenance update in the middle of March, but we haven’t really heard from them since. Well, it looks like at least some users are starting to see the update to firmware 1.3.418 in one way or another. We received a tip claiming that they were starting to see the upgrade, and a user over at AndroidForums.com says their replacement DROID X2 received yesterday came with the firmware pre-installed. It would appear that Motorola is rolling it out to at least some.

Yes, that's the original Tegra 2-powered Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 16GB, though the differences between the Tab 10.1 and Tab 2 10.1 aren't that big. Not to be outdone by its Korean counterpart, LG announced its own flagship smartphone on the same day as the the Galaxy S III. The Optimus LTE2, as it is called, is no less when it comes to features and specifications and in some aspects even outdoes Samsung's offering. For starters, the design seems to be a bit better. While Samsung has gone with an all plastic body, LG has opted for a bit of glass and metal, in other words, something befitting of a flagship device.

The display on the phone is something that LG likes to call TrueHD IPS display.

It looks like we're finally hating one feature in Windows 8. So far, based on what we've seen, we are pretty impressed with Microsoft's latest operating system. But today's announcement changed our opinion a bit. The company announced today that its entertainment hub, Windows Media Center, will be pulled out by default once Windows 8 arrives. Why? We'll get into that later. But we do know that if you want to get the package, you will have to pay for it.

Two nano PCs, actually, and both expected to be announced officially this week according to FanlessTech. The first is the Foxconn AT-5300, running off a 2.13GHz dual-core Cedar Trail D2700, while the second - the AT-5600 - is powered by AMD's popular (but last-gen) 1.65GHz E450 APU. Each one consumes around 15W idle and 24W under load, which is the equivalent of somewhere between an Ultrabook and a regular laptop and low enough to be passively cooled.

We've seen solar panels utilize spinach which was used to replace the more expensive silicon components, and if going green is your thing, you might be interested to hear that scientists at the University of Southern California have managed to develop a new type of solar cell made from nanocrystals that are apparently so small, you would be able to fit 250 billion of them onto the head of a pin. Thanks to their size, these nanocrystals can be made into an ink and painted or printed onto clear surfaces, thus allowing solar cells to be printed on materials like plastic that can be bent and shaped to fit just about anywhere.

Internet speeds drop around the world according to Akamai, adoption rate up

Here's an odd one: average connection speeds around the globe dropped 14 percent to just 2.3 Mbps during the last quarter of 2011. The drop off remains something of a mystery since the data used to calculate that result doesn't include mobile broadband (so its increased adoption can't be dragging down the whole) and Akamai offers no explanation. Still, it's not time to start panicking, just yet. Even though speeds in the US dropped 5.3 percent from the previous quarter, average connection rates are still up significantly over the previous year. Otherwise, things largely stayed the same.

Well, it seems that Canon has halted all shipments of the Canon 5D Mk III until this particular light leak issue is fixed, and when the new shipments of the “fixed” Canon 5D Mk III cameras were opened, all Canon did was to introduce an extremely black tape to cover the circuit boards, in addition to plastering another piece over the top LCD light.
