Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 races across the auction block (video)

If you're as excited as we are by the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1, it might be wise to understand the historical significance of those three letters at the end of Chevy's retrofied muscle car. Way back in 1969 – a year some consider to be the apogee of Camaro history – the automaker built just 69 ZL1s, each powered by an aluminum-block 427-cubic-inch V8 that was otherwise unavailable in the Camaro and built specifically for drag racing. The '69 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is highly coveted by collectors, and a perfectly stunning example was auction at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale.

Barrett-Jackson 2012: 1965 Shelby GT350 barn find headed to a new home [UPDATE: w/video]

We all dream of one day walking into a long-abandoned barn in the middle of nowhere and finding a classic muscle or race car, needing little more than some freshening to be restored to its previous glory. But that never happens, right. Wrong. As evidenced by the 1965 Shelby GT350 that is being auctioned at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson auction. As the story goes, this car was still in the possession of its original owner (purchased on September 29, 1965) until 2009, and had only accumulated 44,000 miles.

How Seattle buses get up snowy hills

How Seattle buses get up snowy hills

Seattle has taken a white, snowy beating of late, but the city has made it a point to keep its bus services running. Not being the flattest city on record, Seattle's steeper inclines can present a challenge to municipal vehicles. One way around this is, apparently, to use a wrecker to push a bus up a hill. To the casual eye, this looks like a potential avalanche of lawsuits; a single mistake could make a lot of people very unhappy. However, the practitioners seem so familiar with the act that it comes off as if it's a regular occurrence.

Can rivalry between Caddy and Lincoln heat up again?

Cadillac is getting ready to launch the much anticipated rear-drive ATS and new flagship XTS this year. The Lincoln MKZ concept shown at this month's Detroit Auto Show was very well received, and will be followed by six more new and refreshed vehicles by 2014. Earlier this year, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson told reporters he thought "holy water" should be sprinkled on the Lincoln brand. Ford's marketing chief Jim Farley dropped the "F" bomb on GM in Bill Vlasic's "Once Upon A Car" book, and says brands like Caddy, Lexus and BMW have become "big box" retailers.

Mercedes-Benz says, 'Thanks, Airbag'

Mercedes-Benz has been working on airbag technology for more than 40 years, but now it has other innovations, like Colliision Prevention, that work to keep airbags where everyone wants them: hidden. So Mercedes has made a TV spot for the 2012 B-Class that's also a letter to the airbag, saying somethiing to the effect of "I still love you, but...". We aren't expected to see the B-Class in the U.S.

When Steve Saleen launched his new company, SMS Supercars, back in 2008, he announced that he would be expanding his portfolio of vehicles to include the muscle car offerings from Chevrolet and Dodge. First up was the 570 and 570X Challenger, followed soon after by the 302 Mustang. Now, Steve Saleen's muscle car trifecta is finally complete, as SMS officially unveiled the 620 Camaro at Barrett-Jackson this week. The car maintains the styling cues featured on both the Challenger and Mustang with an aggressive front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, butterfly hood and chrome 20-inch wheels.

Toyota getting help from Gazoo Racing to bring downsized turbo engines to market

According to a report by TheDetroitBureau.com, Toyota is teaming up with Gazoo Razing (full name: Gazoo Racing Masters of Nürburgring) to kickstart development and retail rollout of small-displacement, turbocharged engines. While Toyota is the undisputed leader in hybrid sales, the 274,927 gas-electric vehicles sold in 2011 – that's in total, not just the Prius – still represent a tiny portion of overall sales. By contrast, the EcoBoost-equipped Ford F-150 alone sold 100,000 units last year. Direct injection and updated transmissions are also said to be developmental hot-buttons for Toyota.

2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor tackles Hell's Revenge Trail

We recently went off the beaten path with a Ford F-150 SVT Raptor in Moab, Utah to test the 2012 model's improved off-road chops. While Editor Paukert's tale of the experience certainly gets the point across, there's nothing quite like watching Ford's monster tackle the rocks and dirt in high-definition video, especially video that was taken by a hovering camera-equipped drone. While the Raptor is best known for its desert-storming, dune-jumping prowess (we ourselves have greatly enjoyed getting all four wheels off the ground), what's truly amazing is watching a vehicle this big tackle some of Moab's toughest obstacles at a snail's pace.

The update is about 81 MB in size and will bring your Xoom up to Android build version IML77. The update shall arrive over-the-air, and as such your tablet will notify you when it becomes available.

If you've been planning to pick up the Motorola DROID RAZR but have been waiting for a price cut, you're in luck. Well, the phone won't ship with the 16GB microSD card, so all you'll have is the onboard 16GB for storage, and the option to put in a memory card of your own (great if you have one lying around the house).
Not a bad deal if you ask me, since you can definitely pick up a 16GB card for less than $100 anyway.

For MacBook Air owners, one of the biggest gripes some might have would be the lack of an optical drive, and not to mention somewhat limited storage capacity. Of course it is a tradeoff where a larger regular hard drive is replaced with a faster (but smaller) SSD, and the lack of optical drive probably helped make the device as thin as it is. However there are times when an optical drive would be necessary, and additional storage is required when you've maxed out your 256GB SSD, which is why Velocity Micro has deemed it necessary to launch their VMUltra Drive, an all-in-one companion for notebook/ultrabook users out there.

Much is made about information security, particularly for end-users who tend to sign into their accounts on public computers. Google’s giving their users a seemingly genius option for secure login, though. They’ve employed the use of QR codes to make it more safe for those of you who worry about key-loggers or inadequate network security on public networks. It’s quite simple, actually. Head to this URL on the computer you want to login on. A QR code will be generated.

Sony Xperia S arriving in the UK in March?

Sony Xperia S arriving in the UK in March?

Products announced at events like CES usually don't hit the streets until much later in the year, but it looks like that's not the case for the Sony Xperia S. One of the first Xperia phones without the Sony Ericsson badge might be arriving sooner than we thought according to online retailers in the UK, Clove and Phones4U. On Clove's blog, they announced that the Sony Xperia S will be retailing for £468 ($716) unlocked and off-contract; and will be arriving on the week of March 5th. Now that may seem pricey - but it usually always does after currency conversion.

Nook Tablet bootloader bypassed, Android 4.0 takes its first steps onto the platform

Nook Tablet bootloader bypassed, Android 4.0 takes its first steps onto the platform

No points for calling this one, but it looks like Android 4.0 is well on its way to the Nook Tablet — in a decidedly unofficial manner, of course. Just a few days after the tablet's bootloader was bypassed, developer Brandon Bennet (aka Nemith) has now apparently managed to get an early version of the Android 4.0-based CyanogenMod 9 up and running on the device, although you'll still have to wait a bit longer for something that's actually useable. What's more, some other developers have also managed to get the tablet to boot from a microSD card, and there's been some progress with Ubuntu on the tablet as well.

Sony's concept PCs yanked straight from Star Trek?

Sony's concept PCs yanked straight from Star Trek?

During CES 2012, DVICE came across a few rather interesting concepts presented by Sony that seem to borrow some esthetics from Star Trek: The Next Generation (Sorry Kirk fanboys, but Picard is The Man). The concepts were encased in glass, so there wasn't any touchy-feely going on. But that's ok, because if these products are any indication of what's to come, then the future is looking rather slick.

Linux Kernel grows past 15 million lines of code

Linux Kernel grows past 15 million lines of code

The Linux kernel source code has grown by more than 50-percent in size over the past 39 months, and will cross a total of 15 million lines with the upcoming version 3.3 release. According to a post by The H, about three quarters of the Linux kernel code are drivers, file systems and architecture-specific code, while there are plenty of comments and blank lines as well. The first release of Linux had just 10,000 lines of code, while version 1.0.0 had grown to 176,250 lines by March 1994.
