Experimental Intel Chip Shows Future of CPU Efficiency

The Intel Developer Forum showcases the near-threshold voltage processor. Photo: Intel. Researchers at Intel debuted an experimental processor at the company's developer forum this week, which could lead to devices with significantly lower energy consumption.
The chip — codenamed “Claremont” — is known as a near-threshold voltage processor, which allows transistors to operate at super-low, near “threshold” voltages to increase efficiency and decrease energy consumption.

Apple Might Announce The Next iPhone(s) On 7th October!

The report about the iPhone 5 US launch comes courtesy of The New York Times, which claims that a "fairly different" iPhone may launch imminently. In fact, according to them, the much-hyped iPhone 5 launch is "just weeks away". Citing an anonymous Apple employee as the source, NYT reported that the next iPhone may actually launch on October 7. Chances of Apple launching two different iPhones are fairly strong.

Samsung Epic Touch 4G source code released

Samsung Epic Touch 4G source code released

It was only earlier today that we reported that Sprint's version of the Samsung Galaxy S2, the Epic Touch 4G, would be available today. If you thought that was good news, for developers out there and those who enjoy custom ROMs, perhaps this is even better news as Samsung has released the source code for the handsets. Granted it would require the handset to be rooted first before anything can be done, but given the speed and tight-knit nature of the Android developer community, we're guessing it shouldn't take too long before someone comes up with a method for rooting the Epic Touch 4G.

Shocker: Verizon director admits to LTE-Advanced future

AT&T took to the stage to announce its LTE network will go live on Sunday, which means today's the perfect day for its fiercest rival to one-up the news. Verizon's director of network technology Praveen Atreya, dropped the rather unsurprising news that the next natural step in the company's data evolution chain will be LTE-Advanced. Don't get your hopes up so fast, though: Atreya says it's still too early in the game to test the new tech or figure out its potential speeds (spoiler: they'll be disgustingly fast), so we're likely not going to see any widescale deployment for at least the next few years.

Sony Alpha NEX-7 hands-on preview (video)

Sony Alpha NEX-7 hands-on preview (video)

There are some cameras that we would be willing to use in a bind, some that we wouldn't hesitate to shoot with, and a very select few that would motivate a cross-country journey, just for the chance to spend a few days behind the lens. Sony's Alpha NEX-7 falls within that incredibly unique final category - in fact, we've done just that, flying from New York to San Diego to go hands-on with one of only a half-dozen pre-production samples to have landed on American soil. After seeing a very early NEX-7 prototype a few months ago, it didn't take much convincing to get us on a plane.

Volkswagen Polo R WRC looks ready to tackle the tarmac

Volkswagen Polo R WRC looks ready to tackle the tarmac

Volkswagen announced earlier this year that it would be entering the World Rally Championship starting in 2013 with the Polo R, and we got our first glimpse of the race car here in Frankfurt. While it's easy to see the similarities to the road version, the Polo R WRC has been transformed into an all-out rally car with widened fenders, a fully stripped and caged interior, and plenty of carbon fiber on the body. Under the hood is a race-prepped version of Volkswagen's 1.6-liter STI engine producing something in the range of 300 horsepower. 300 HP.

When it comes to the iPhone 5, the rumors just can't seem to stop. Unfortunately unlike other handset leaks or rumors, the ones surrounding the iPhone 5 just can't seem to agree with each other. Some are suggesting it will be a radical change, while some are saying it will be a mild refresh. Some say it will feature an elongated home button with an edge-to-edge display, while others say that the home button will remain the same.

2012 Opel Zafira Tourer seats 7, returns up to 44 mpg

Barely altered from the concept that wowed crowds at the Geneva Motor Show is the 2012 Zafira Tourer revealed by Opel in Frankfurt. The Zafira Tourer is still a sleek, seven-passenger MPV and perhaps one of only a few lookers in its class. Priced at £21,000 in its most basic guise, the 2012 Zafira Tourer undercuts even the cheapest Ford S-Max by more than £1,200. All Tourer models come well equipped, with air-conditioning, cruise control, six airbags and active headrests as standard.

Maserati GranCabrio Fendi edition is one rapid fashion accessory

A modern Maserati is as much a fashion statement as it is a performance machine, and the Modenese automaker aptly demonstrated that much with the latest edition of the GranCabrio. Called the GranTurismo Convertible on this Western side of the Atlantic, the massive four-seat droptop is about as chic as it gets.

YouTube unveils post-production suite, includes Instagram-like effects and shake reduction

Nothing says 'YouTube' like a grainy handheld shot that acts as a catalyst for nausea; sadly, this may all be set to change. The digital home of Home Videos has introduced a suite of new effects that lets you patch up your candid classics, even after you've uploaded them. What's more, the changes you make are non-destructive, so if your grand idea proves dreadful in reality, you can go back and undo all your meddling.

ASUS Eee Pad Slider arriving at month's end, starting at $475 (video)

It's been more than eight months since the ASUS Eee Pad Slider was born at CES and since then, we've seen listings online and heard endless promises that it's coming "soon." Today, though, at a media event here in New York City, we managed a prolonged hands-on with the thing - along with assurance that it'll hit the US before month's end. According to an ASUS rep, it'll ship with Android 3.2 and start at $475 for the 16GB model (roughly as leaked) with the beefier 32GB number fetching an extra hundred bucks. That means we'll be putting it through its paces soon enough, but in the meantime, head past the break for some early impressions.
