US Navy LASR research facility builds robots, not ray guns

The US Navy announced a new robotics research facility this week located within the existing Naval Research Laboratory's main site in Washington D.C. The Laboratory for Autonomous Systems Research, or LASR, was created to support NRL research in "robotics and autonomous systems of interest to the Navy, the Marine Corps and the Department of Defense," wrote LASR director Alan C. Shultz, mentioning that a familiar sounding autonomous firefighting robot would be among the lab's projects.

Another Samsung Galaxy S III photo leaked

Briefmobile have reportedly stumbled across a Samsung Galaxy S III leaked image, and appear confident that it could be legit. Their reasons. The ICS TouchWiz interface, and the Weber Shandwick logo (I don’t understand why that adds any real credibility). My two cents? It’s a fake. Firstly, it’s based off a Reddit thread, so you have to take that with a grain of salt. Secondly, see both the views of the phone. It’s white on grey in the face on view, and grey on white in the side view.

If This is a Sample Photo from the Samsung Galaxy S III, I'd Be Disappointed

A photo has hit Picasa with some interesting EXIF data. It claims that photo was taken with a Samsung GT-I9300, the model number believed to be reserved for the yet-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy S3. The camera is 8.1 megapixels. It’s hard to put a ton of faith into EXIF data so I’m having a hard time getting excited. And if this photo is anything to go by (that’s if it’s real, of course), that is one sorry camera on the Galaxy S III. My original Galaxy S took better indoor photos and I have a hard time imagining that Samsung would regress in this area. Take it for what you will.

Sneaky YouTube Update Enables HD Playback for Pre-Honeycomb Devices (Galaxy Note)

Sneaky YouTube Update Enables HD Playback for Pre-Honeycomb Devices (Galaxy Note)

Okay, so the YouTube app has been updated in the Google Play store today and this one was a little more sneaky than most. Seeing how the official YouTube app is already installed on your device, jumping into your apps list wont show you that an update is available. No, sir. You're going to have to update this one manually by searching for the app yourself, and clicking update. Wasn't so hard now, was it?

The update will bring the YouTube app up-to-date with version 2.4.4 (previously, 2.3.4) and although it doesn't seem like all that much has changed, apparently, there is a new “HD option” for applicable pre-Honeycomb devices.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition announced

Remember the countdown timer spotted on baldursgate.com today. Well since some of us here are hardcore fans of the RPG, we decided to wait it out and see what was going to happen when the countdown reached zero. Sure enough, as we predicted - the page would refused to load, providing us with error messages and so on. Thankfully through Twitter (yes, Baldur's Gate is trending at this very moment) we managed to find out what the fuss was all about.
Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition has been officially announced, and will be arriving in Summer 2012.

Samsung, LG and others fined $40 million in Korean price-fixing scam

. Korean regulators on Thursday fined domestic mobile phone manufacturers and carriers 45.3 billion won (roughly $40.2 million) for price-fixing and consumer fraud. According to the Fair Trade Commission, the companies secretly agreed to inflate the prices of cell phones while advertising offers with considerable incentives. The companies' actions apparently tricked consumers into thinking they were buying a new phone for a bargain. “Companies took advantage of the complicated price setting practice in the mobile telecommunications sector to trick consumers,” an FTC official said.

As we saw the iPhone 4's release, a massive bump in screen resolution means that plenty of apps need to be updated to fully take advantage of all those extra pixels, and today has seen a few big name ones get optimized for the new iPad's Retina display. The biggest of those is Amazon's Kindle app, which now promises sharper fonts than ever, along with a few other changes including the ability to switch between books stored on your device and in the cloud.

Smartphone owners want bigger touchscreens, 4″-4.5″ is the sweet spot

Just in case the proliferation of ever bigger-screened Android devices wasn't clue enough, there's now a survey that has concluded that people want bigger screens. Well, bigger than the iPhone's, at least. According to Strategy Analytics, almost 90% of existing smartphone owners surveyed chose a prototype smartphone with a display larger than their current device. The 4-to-4.5-inch range seems to constitute the sweet spot for people nowdays. There are some caveats though. First of all, with a screen that large, phones also have to be very thin. And there are slight differences in what women want compared to men.

Neutrinos can transmit messages through walls, mountains, planets

Neutrinos may not travel as fast as we first hoped, but then they have other special abilities to make up for it. Being almost massless, they can penetrate the thickest barriers, which ought to make them ideal message carriers. To illustrate the point, scientists sent the word "Neutrino" on a beam of particles through 240 meters (800 feet) of solid stone and received it loud and clear on the other side.

DROID X2 Over-The-Air Update Being Pushed Out – Brings Bug Fixes And Google Security Patch

Motorola Droid X2 users should be expecting a 35MB over-the-air update hitting their device in the coming days. Software version 1.3.418.MB870 is being pushed out and will bring the usual set of bug fixes, a little added bloatware and some kind of “Google security patch.”. If you’ve been holding out, waiting for Android 4.0, it’s been all but confirmed that the device will most likely not be seeing an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich in it’s lifetime (officially, anyway). Which is awfully strange seeing how a device with dual-cores was just about made for the new multi-threading improvements found in ICS.

There are quite a lot of rumors going around about the Galaxy S3 nowadays, with the latest one being the phone about to enter production. Well, today we've got one more to add to the mix. The folks over at Phonearena.com received from a tipster, an image that is supposed to be the press render of the Galaxy S3′s “final design”. Judging by the image, it looks a lot like the Galaxy S2 sans the capacitive buttons at the bottom, but with an almost bezel-less display. However, there's a lot about the image that just doesn't seem right.

Firstly, the display looks like it was quickly put together in Photoshop.

On Friday Blizzard's Jay Wilson said that PvP will not be a part of Diablo 3 when the game goes retail (in 2Q12). He said that PvP Arena and its systems aren't living up to their standards in its present form, thus it will be released in a patch following the game's debut. The team felt this was a better option than delaying the entire game and punishing those who merely want to enjoy the campaign and core solo/co-op content.

You cannot just erase a printed paper from your inkjet or laser printer, can you. Well, technological advancements might just change that line of thinking, thanks to a new method that was discovered by an engineering team at the University of Cambridge in the UK who managed to discover how one can erase pages through the vaporizing of common toners thanks to a laser-based technique which will not cause any damage to the underlying paper at all.

Once its pressure sensors detect the wearer is picking up a tool the synthetic tendons retract, holding them there until the sensor gives the signal to release.

According to the company, the shell (made from aircraft-grade aluminium) gets slammed with a whopping "10,000 volts of energy," causing a reaction that quickly leads to the black color and smooth texture. Notably, HTC points out that this is actually a treatment to the metal, rather than a finish on top of it.
