McAfee shows how major Android scamware ticks, prevents us from learning first-hand

McAfee shows how major Android scamware ticks, prevents us from learning first-hand

Most Android malware lives in the margins, away from Google Play and the more reliable app shops. It's nonetheless a good idea to be on the lookout for rogue code, and McAfee has stepped in with thorough explanations of how one of the most common scamware strains, Android.FakeInstaller, works its sinister ways. The bait is typically a search-optimized fake app market or website; the apps themselves not only present a legitimate-looking front but include dynamic code to stymie any reverse engineering.

Although these have been accomplished by two different branch entities, there's no doubt the folks over at Disney are in a deal-making mood as of late. Having recently announced a deal bringing new content to Cablevision subscribers, Disney has also partnered up with LG to bring an array of 3D films over to its Smart TV platform - so long as the units are 3D-ready and you are in the US, of course.

Huawei reportedly mulling an IPO

Huawei reportedly mulling an IPO

. Huawei Technologies has reportedly reached out to various investment banks for advice on filing an initial public offering, according to The Wall Street Journal. The Chinese company is said to be interested in an IPO in an attempt to gain more contracts in larger markets such as the United States, and because of that, it is leaning more towards a U.S. listing over Hong Kong or London. The public offering would also help Huawei ease the concerns of Western governments that fear the company has close ties to China's military.

The best thing about Steve Jobs was his vision was more about the products than the money

. I spent last night re-reading stories about Steve Jobs' life  and I realized why he was so different from most CEOs out there: For Jobs, making money was of secondary importance. Now, don't get me wrong. Money was extremely important to Jobs as it is to all capitalists. Jobs, Tim Cook and company wouldn't have spent years building up the most efficient production and distribution system in the world if they didn't care about the bottom line.

Microsoft Surface tablet paid a visit to the FCC?

We all know for sure that Microsoft will be rolling out their very own Surface tablet device in due time (at the end of this month, actually) which will run on the Windows RT operating system. Well, before any piece of consumer electronics are released in the US, they will first need to receive relevant approval from the FCC – and it seems that this is just what happened with the Microsoft Surface tablet via a post on the FCC website that depicted uploaded documents which parade a “tablet PC” of sorts that was running on Windows RT.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update coming “soon”

Samsung has officially announced that the long awaited Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for their current flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S3, will be coming soon. It makes perfect sense after all if Samsung wants to remain on the competitive edge with their Galaxy S3, as there are still plenty of miles left in the proverbial legs of this smartphone. In fact, the South Korean consumer electronics giant alongside Google and carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T have all been working hand in hand so that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates will be introduced to as many compatible devices as possible within the shortest time period.

Samsung expects around $7.28 billion in operating profits for Q3, setting another record

Samsung has provided investors guidance ahead of its full Q3 earnings report that's due before October 26th, and as has been the custom, the numbers are huge. It's expecting a fourth straight record quarter with overall operating profits of 8.1 trillion won ($7.28 billion), an amount that would more than double last year's results for the same period and up sharply from Q2s $5.86 billion, on sales of 52 trillion won ($46 billion). We'll have to wait for the full report to see numbers broken down by department, but it's safe to say that there's a lot of Galaxy S IIIs (it ticked past 20 million last month) adding up to reach that pinnacle.

Muscle Suits make heavy lifting easier

Muscle Suits make heavy lifting easier

[CEATEC 2012] While humans have been lifting heavy objects with the aid of machinery for many years now, it's usually through someone sitting behind the controls of a machine. And even though they're usually effective, such machines to can be imprecise or impractical in certain situations (i.e. lifting objects in small, enclosed areas). However, with all the advancements in technology, we're getting closer to a solution that works in such situations – powered suits which provide extra strength and support for its wearers to lift heavy objects.

. Despite the fact that MetroPCS (PCS) officially accepted T-Mobile's offer to merge, Sprint (S) may attempt to counter T-Mobile's offer with a more appealing one, according to a report from Business Week. The company is said to be crunching numbers and holding talks with its advisors to evaluate the price of MetroPCS. The nation's third-largest carrier nearly purchased MetroPCS earlier this year before Sprint's board vetoed the offer. The carrier reportedly began reevaluating an offer a few weeks ago, prior to T- Mobile's deal being made public, and could have a decision as early as next week.

However I have to admit that I am rather unimpressed by Panasonic's new AX2. Don't get me wrong I like the overall look of the AX2, like other model this Ultrabook is well build and sturdy, but, and yes there is but I am not a huge fan of their design choice when it comes to Panasonic understanding of an Hybrid Laptop. New Nexus devices must be Android 5.0 compatible [Rumor]

At the end of last month, we took a look at rumors surrounding the LG Optimus G Nexus which claim that it could very well be the next Nexus device, and here we are with more information from an anonymous source on how hardware manufacturers can qualify for the "Nexus program" – for starters, they need to use stock Android and 64MB of secure memory for media streaming. There will be allowances made for custom user interface skins, as well as additional hardware requirements to ensure that the Nexus family can support Android 5.0 that is tipped to arrive by Fall next year.

Truth is stranger than fiction after all, and it seems that the latest iteration of Boston Dynamics' LS3 (Legged Squad Support System) has taken a page out of George Lucas' Star Wars book, where it definitely brings back memories of the AT-AT (All Terrain Armoured Transport) Walker that debuted in Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back, although there is a far closer resemblance to the AT-TE (All Terrain Tactical Enforcer) Walker that appeared in Episode 2: Attack of the Clones.

Mechanical Donkey Kong game tests your barrel-jumping skills, patience

We've seen quite a few NES mods in our day, but we can't say we've ever seen one hooked up to anything quite like this. Built by DIY-er Martin Raynsford, this contraption / work-of-art makes use of an Arduino (naturally) to relay signals from the NES controller to the Donkey Kong screen brought to life above, which was constructed with near pixel-perfect accuracy out of laser-cut parts. As Raynsford points out, though, things are still a bit limited in the game's V1 state. There isn't much of an actual "game," for starters - just Mario stuck in the middle with a never-ending loop of barrels / ball bearings that you can jump over.

Google patents smart watch with flip-up display that could reveal everyday objects' secrets

It looks like Google has considered transferring ideas from Project Glass over to your wrist by patenting a smart watch with a transparent, flip-up touchscreen. If such a device ever came off the USPTO papers, it would present notifications and other info transmitted from your smartphone at a glance, like many, many others now on the market. However, Mountain View's added a new twist when you'd flip up its bezel - at that point, it's claimed that the watch could channel a plethora of other Google apps, like Gmail, Goggles, and Maps.
