myLED adds blinking notification LED to iPhones and iPads

myLED adds blinking notification LED to iPhones and iPads

If Tim Cook would ask me what changes I would make to the iPhone, it wouldn't take me long to blurt out my top 5 list. Better battery life, widgets, dedicated call answer/end button, dedicated camera shutter button and a notification LED. I don't think Tim cares what I think or want, but I'll soon be able to mark one of those features off my list if the myLED Kickstarter project gets fully funded. Seeking $18,000 in pledges, the myLED is a small LED adapter which plugs into the headphone jack of the iPhone or iPad. It blinks in customizable patterns to let you know when things have happened on your phone.

Microsoft Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 And Surface Book In The Pipeline?

Microsoft Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 And Surface Book In The Pipeline?

Boy, nearly 24 hours after the dust has settled on Microsoft announcing the pricing details of the Surface Pro (which does not come cheap at all, mind you), and here we are with rumors that Microsoft is already working on a sequel to the Surface, in addition to having plans for a Surface Pro 2 and Surface Book, where all three of those devices are meant to be ready for a 2013 release. Yeah, that's what I thought too, and needed to hold the rails of my working chair before I collapsed out of sheer shock. Don't you think that having a sequel to the mentioned devices is just way too soon.

Jaguar F-Type greets US, shows off range of personalization

While the debut of the XFR-S is likely fresh on everyone's minds and browser windows, the other big story of late at Jaguar is the F-Type coupe and convertible. Originally unveiled in Paris, the LA show was the first opportunity that the sub-XK performance machine will be seen Stateside. However, it was not just the same news that we first heard in Paris, as Jaguar used LA to showcase its newly available "Black" design pack. This styling package includes gloss black finishes for the grill surround, side vents, a flat-bottomed sport steering wheel, gloss black interior touches, and instrument panel rings.

Nanotech Electronic Nose To Sniff Out Bombs

Nanotech Electronic Nose To Sniff Out Bombs

Despite all the different kinds of advancements made in the field of science and technology, modern day electronics are still unable to pick out a bomb the way a well trained dog is able to do so, as man's best friend has an unrivalled olfactory ability. They are about to receive a new challenger in the form of a nanotech device, thanks to researchers over at the University of California in Santa Barbara. This nanotech device was obviously inspired by a dog's scent receptors, relying on microfluidics to detect airborne molecules of TNT explosives, and is smart enough to tell them from other similar molecules.

2013 Fiat 500c Abarth takes its top off with a quickness

2013 Fiat 500c Abarth takes its top off with a quickness

What a pleasant little piece of plug-and-play. Putting the Fiat 500c's retractable roof on the hot 500 Abarth was pretty much a no-brainer, and hey, we certainly aren't complaining. Folding the soft top back on the little hatchback will only allow us to better hear that awesome exhaust note while we're burying the throttle. And come on, who doesn't like a little wind-in-your-hair action.
Again, the 500c Abarth package is pretty much a copy/paste job, so dynamically, the car isn't all that different.

Renault planning a Tata Nano rival. Again.

Renault planning a Tata Nano rival. Again.

Four years ago, Renault confirmed that it would partner with India's Bajaj Auto to develop a rival to the Tata Nano. At the time, as everyone waited for the Tata Nano to arrive, you could have used a Richter scale to measure the tremors the executive suites of any automaker with an interest in the low end of emerging markets. Then the Nano, still the cheapest car in the world, didn't sell so well – at the end of last year its sales were just six percent of its most conservative projections – and everyone seemed content to let Tata spend the money to figure out if there really was a market for the cheapest car in the world.

2014 Chevrolet Spark EV makes first appearance in LA

While we still haven't learned how far it goes on a charge, Chevrolet offered the media a very close look at its upcoming 2014 Spark EV at an event the evening before the LA Auto Show rang its opening bell. Not only did we have a chance to look at the $32,500 ($25,000 after tax incentives) five-door urban mini car in its production-ready state, but the automaker brought a second Spark EV opened up like a sardine can so we could view its technical innards. As we mentioned yesterday when the Spark EV was unveiled, the five-passenger pure-electric is fitted with a 20-plus kilowatt-hour battery pack driving the front wheels.

Don't you just hate it when at night you want to go to the toilet, or when you accidentally drop your phone and it's too dark to see anything, especially right after you wake up and you're all groggy. Granted that's what bedside lamps are for, but if you're into sustainability and solar power, then this concept device dubbed the Clip Holding might be a device you wish would be made a reality. Designed by a bunch of folks at the Shannxi University of Science and Technology, the Clip Holding is rather simplistic in nature, although chockfull of functionality.

Series of hotel break-ins attributed to security flaw in hotel keycard system

Remember earlier this year we reported that thanks to a hacker, a security flaw was discovered in the keycard system used by hotels around the world. One would assume that after learning about this flaw that hotels around the world would rush to replace their keycard systems, or at the very least the company who provides said system, Onity, would replace them. While we can't speak for other hotels, it seems that a rash of hotel break-ins in Houston have been attributed to a burglar who used the same hack to enter the rooms.

Artificial Cartilage Generated With 3D Printer

Artificial Cartilage Generated With 3D Printer

Cartilage is an essential body structure that has the consistency of plastic and amazing properties like being able to bear weight, but yet be much more flexible than bone. Unlike bone, it does not contain any blood vessel or nerves, which makes it a prime target for artificial replacements. A team at North Carolina's Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine has developed a way to print a cartilage replacement, using a 3D printer.

Lotus Esprit all but ready to go, but held back by management issues

Brief and disappointing is this report from Autocar on the status of the Lotus Esprit: it is finally ready and sitting at the light, but the light might not go green for a long time. The good news is that from being a concept two years ago at the Paris Motor Show, the aluminum and carbon fiber revival coupe is "purportedly almost finished." It is powered by a twin-turbo, 5.0-liter V8 with something like 650 horsepower, boosted by a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) and shifting through a seven-speed paddleshift transmission.

This is how to fix your car's dents with a GoPro

This is how to fix your car's dents with a GoPro

Body shops employ all kinds of sorcery when it comes to correcting crimes against sheetmetal. Their arsenal of tools is wide and varied and almost always includes a massive suction cup or two. You know, just like the powerful GoPro suction mount. A skilled hand can apply the suction cup, give a swift yank and fix large, unsightly dents as if they were never there. Curious to apply the theory to your own bruised fender? You're in luck. The video above shows a handful of Kiwis getting crafty with a GoPro mount to fix the rear quarter on their Starlet GT.

Don't have a GoPro? Don't sweat it.

Toyota developing new pre-crash braking aids

Toyota developing new pre-crash braking aids

Automotive News Europe reports that Toyota is set to debut a pair of pre-crash safety systems. The company hopes the tech will help reduce the likelihood of high-speed crashes and accidents caused by pedal misapplication. One of the systems uses millimeter-wave radar to calculate the risk of a collision. Like the Volvo City Safety technology, when the vehicle senses an impending crash, it alerts the driver with both audio and visual cues. A new brake booster can then be activated to help deliver twice the braking force typically available.

Toyota also hopes to prevent parking collisions with an additional automatic braking system.
